Abstract:

This paper examines Saleh Hosseini's style as a literary translator in Persian's translation of Woolf's To the Lighthouse in the light of Baker's universals of translation. First, it reviews the related literature and discusses the belief that translator's style is less important than that of the writer. Second, the paper refers to the stylistic studies of narrative texts along with the different definitions of style. Third, it mentions the stylistics of the translator in the light of the universals of translation as being proposed by Baker: exploitation, simplification, leveling out and normalization. Finally, it is concluded that in Hosseini's translation, normalization is the most frequent universal

Abstract:

This article mainly focuses on ideology and its vestiges throughout translation, with particular emphasis on literary translation. For this purpose, the researcher employed the critical discourse analysis (CDA) translation model which was proposed by Farahzad (2008) to delve into the potential and probable impacts of different ideologies prevailing in separate socio-historical situations on the translations of the American novel "Gone with the Wind".To carry out this analytical descriptive corpus-based research, three translations of the novel done by three different translators under varying socio-historical conditions in Iran were examined. The results clearly showed that ideologies of the dominant groups as well as those of translators working under different sociohistorical conditions have visibly affected the translation products and manifest signs of manipulations within both micro and macro levels could be observed

Abstract:

In the interactional studies researchers try to investigate the role of variables on each other. Culture and translation are among the most determining and in infuential variables in human communication. The present study is an attempt to offer a content analysis of translation studies researchers' views regarding the interaction between culture and translation. This paper assumes a comparative, descriptive, and analytical approach to the investigation of the interaction between culture and translation through the study of translatologists’, linguists', and translators' attitudes. Four variables are inferred throughout the study. The results of the study reveal that 67.44% of the scientists have investigated the interaction between language and culture proving that language is developed through culture and vice versa. 86% of the researchers believe that culture influences translational discourse in a number of ways. Moreover, 35.13% of the investigators maintain that in the course of human history translations have influenced the nature of human culture and people's national identity. Successful application of language in the world of translation and translator education depends on culture and culture helps human to discover and develop teaching, learning, and problem solving strategies and resources in the area of translation. Therefore, the nature of the data shows a cause and effect relationship between these variables implying the necessity of the inclusion of the investigation of the cultural origin of the language and the situations it is used in the educational planning. As a result, the authorities should review and reform the pedagogical and practical foundations of human communication and interaction such as curriculum development, material development, and educational planning. Since in human communication education, such as language teaching and translation education, the major discussion is about anthropology, then the major trends of research and education should be focused on different aspects of culture and cultural variables.

Abstract:

Neologisms are perhaps the non-literary and the professional translator's biggest problems (Newmark, 1988: 140). The present paper tends to investigate the Persian translations of some plays by Shakespeare as well as the seventeenth chapter of Ulysses by Joyce in order to study the nature of neologisms in these masterpieces and also to detect the translation methods and procedures applied, so as to examine the translators visibility and to come up with some notions about the requirements of translating writers whose works enjoy a neologistic property. It has been concluded that the translation methods and procedures applied as well as translators' intention are some determining factors in the visibility of translators and similitude of the target text to the source text.

Abstract:

In this study, Conrad's unique style of adjectival features in Heart of Darkness and two Persian translations of this novella were investigated to see what types of procedures had been used by the two translators, and to make sure which procedures were appropriate in conveying Conrad's impressionist style. The corpus was investigated using the AntConc software, and the equivalents were extracted from the translations. The results demonstrated that Conrad's Heart of Darkness is rich in adjectives. Also, most of the adjectives were descriptive and semantically ambiguous showing the author's attitude and perception towards his surrounding so as to impress the reader and to trigger contemplation, in line with the principles of his impressionist style. The study also demonstrated that despite the fact that Conrad's prose is considered as poetic, successful transferring of his style into Persian was found not to be impossible. However, such an achievement requires the familiarity of the translatorwith Conrad's style, on the one hand, and employing appropriate translationprocedures, on the other.

Abstract:

A close study of the history of translation in the West reveals that free translation/ fidelity to the source text, and source/target oriented translations are the predominant issues which translation studies have so far been concerned with. Such translations have rarely been looked upon from the point of view of history and power, while the history of colonialism is filled with instances where the dominant colonial culture has exercised guided control over the translation of texts into local or bedouin target languages, turning translation into a powerful tool in the hands of the dominant (source/target) cultures. This paper renders a historical and postcolonial critical review of the English translations of the works of the great classical Persian poet, Hafiz. Upon presenting a brief history of the translation of Divan-e Hafiz, five ethnocentric patterns in the translation of this work which have led to the presentation of a distorted image of the poet and his historical, cultural and literary standing will be discussed.

Abstract:

The translation of religious texts is considered the earliest source in translation studies. One of the most effective texts in Persian translation studies is the Islamic religious texts particularly the Holy Qur'an. The present study is an attempt to investigate what happens to a Qur'anic sentence that does not have a subject in the process of translation. To this end, all occurrences of a sentence starting with a pro-drop structure "yas'alunekd' - meaning "they ask you" - are contrasted in different Persian translations of the Holy Qur'an. Moreover, the ways a pro-drop Arabic structure is translated into a Persian pro-drop and an English non pro-drop structure are studied by an analysis of 40 Persian and 7 English translations. The investigation revealed that in some cases a translator can reproduce the subject in definite form while the author in source language has no intention in presenting subject in indefinite form.

Abstract:

Translation is the process of conveying source text message into the target language. In this process, in most cases, source text's punctuation marks are either ignored or applied improperly in the target text. Generally, the most common function of punctuation marks which is the maintenance of cohesion and coherence is conveyed to the target text, while many other functions can be defined for punctuation marks in different text-types. Theorists such as Newmark (1988), Nord (1991), and Reiss (1977/89) put emphasis on considering the punctuation marks in the process of text analysis as well as in different text types and deem it necessary for translators to convey them to the target text. This research aims at investigating how translators deal with punctuation marks and also to identify the effects of the applied strategies on target texts.
