Abstract

Hermans claims that Islamic world considers the Qur'an untranslatable. Coming from a colonizer/Occident state, he projects the problematic issues in the Bible translation, namely authority and authenticity, on the translation of the Qur’an. As the colonizer/orientalist perceives the Orient as a whole and makes generalizations, Hermans claims a general assumption regarding the Islamic world. The author argue that since the early days of Islam and at the time of the Prophet (PBUH) Muslims have translated the Qur’an. Those who oppose translating do not often distinguish between PERMISSIBILITY and translatability. The impermissibility disputes were initiated among Arabs, especially in Ottoman Empire and early times of the Republic of Turkey. AGENCY, in its micro (translator, publisher, finance/politics) and macro (institutions) levels, is a key factor in accepting a translation of the Qur’an by Muslims. Unlike early translators who were high ranking orthodox Islamic scholars that undertook the task for disseminating Islam, at that time translators were followers of new religions who used translations as a means to proclaim their ideological uniqueness. Moreover, translation was encouraged for nationalistic purposes. Translators had not worked within the religious establishment, nor did they have professional training in Quranic disciplines. The orientalist missionaries were also busy with producing erroneous translations of the Qur’an. In such a turbulent era, both opponents and supporters of translating the Qur'an blame the colonizer and its agents as the initiators of the idea of (un) translatability.
