Abstract:

Background & Objective: Evaluating students’ ability in diagnosing and treating patients after graduation has been recognized as a priority for medical education. The aim of this study is to evaluate students’ ability after graduation from Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Iran, in diagnosing and treating orthopedic problems. Methods: This is a retrospective, cross sectional study carried out on 115 graduated general practitioners of 2001-2006 academic years. In this study, to evaluate the competency of general practitioners graduated from KUMS in musculoskeletal medicine, participants were asked to complete a standard questionnaire with 36 questions in 9 domains. Results: The total competency of the studied people was 65%. The highest competency level was related to the domains of treatment of fractures and dislocation, the initial treatment of open fractures, and diagnosis of fracture and dislocation (80%, 77%, and 73%, respectively). The lowest competency level was related to the domains of congenital deformity of feet, musculoskeletal system tumors, and congenital dislocation of the hip (47%, 50%, and 52%, respectively). No difference was observed between men and women in the mentioned domains. Conclusion: The results of our study revealed that in general the competency of graduated physicians was average. Accordingly, it is recommended that universities recognize weaknesses of graduated general practitioners according to a compiled program. Moreover, annual education programs can prevent more problems from occurring in the work setting and higher levels of education of these general practitioners.

Background & Objective: One goal of education is to prepare students to deal with future issues and to be innovative. Therefore, the issues related to their learning be focused on and strengthened. This study has been done to evaluate the effect of note taking skills training on the students’ academic self–efficacy. Methods: This study was done using test method (Pretest, posttest with control group). The statistical society included the undergraduate students of the School of Literature and Humanities of Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman, Kerman, Iran, and the School of Public Health of Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Iran (2009-2010). The study sample included 110 undergraduate students; 55 in the experimental group (30 cases of literature and 25 cases of Public Health) and 55 in the control group (30 cases of literature and 25 cases of Public Health). The samples were selected by a single-stage cluster sampling method. For data collection the Morgan-Jinks Student Efficacy Scale (MJSES) was used. The pre-test was conducted in the two groups before the training. The note taking skills training program was carried out in the experimental group in seven 2 hour sessions once a week. The test groups were given the post-test after completing the course. T-test and the covariance analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Findings showed that academic self-efficacy significantly increased after note-taking training in tested groups (P<0.005). Moreover, the comparison of the two colleges showed that teaching these skills had a significant relationship with academic self-efficacy of students of the School of Health (P<0.005), but no significant relationship was found with the students of the School of Literature and Humanities (P>0.005).Conclusion: Due to the positive impact of note-taking skills training, it seems that educational practitioners must invest more in the training of this skill and university’s professors, as individuals influencing students, should include note-taking skills in their academic courses to facilitate the teaching and learning process of these skills.

Abstract:

Background & Objective: Evaluation of prescriptions of doctors and particularly medical interns is an essential method for obtaining information about prescribing patterns and drug consumption. The present study aimed to assess the ability of prescription writing of medical interns and young doctors for common illnesses. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the ability of prescription writing of medical interns and recently graduated doctors was evaluated via objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) on ten common diseases in Sanandaj Medical School, Iran, in 2010.Results: The average number of medicine for each prescription was 2.1 and the average score of participants in all stations was 62%. From the correct prescriptions 81.5% had appropriate medicine and 34.4% accurate dosage, and 21.3% with precise course of treatment. 24.1% had administered wrong drugs for patients. Half of the cases determined the correct treatment period. In terms of related factors the score of girls was better than boys (P=0.03). However, there was no relationship between their ability and age, marital status, average mark of interns, or their medical exam score in pre-internship examination (r=0.1).Conclusion: Prescription writing ability of participants was relatively acceptable, but important issues such as drug dosage, frequency of consumption and course of treatment, which are essential in disease treatment, should be improved. Therefore, it is necessary to review medical education programs and curriculums.

Background & Objective: Portfolio is useful as a learning method and an evaluating scale. The goal of this survey was to study the effect of portfolio based evaluation on the accuracy of clinical evaluation of nursing students during their internship in Arak University of Medical Sciences, Arak, Iran. Methods: This educational trial was conducted on all senior nursing students (n=30) of Arak University of Medical Sciences. Their clinical learning was evaluated by routine (first two weeks) and portfolio evaluation (last two weeks). All data were analyzed with SPSS version 17.Results: Mean age of students (14 boys and 16 girls) was 22.7 ± 1.2 years. Mean of scores given by the instructor based on routine (19.4) and portfolio methods (16.5) in nursing management internship course had a significant difference (3 scores) (P=0.0001). Moreover, mean of scores given by the instructor based on routine (19.11) and portfolio methods (16.3) in the internal internship course had a significant difference (3 scores) (P=0.0001). Mean scores of students’ opinions about effective learning in internal wards with routine and portfolio methods had a significant difference (P£0.001).Conclusion: Scores based on routine evaluation forms cannot be real, since they are, subjective not objective. However, scores based on portfolios are more real. In spite of some limitations, portfolio is applicable and user-friendly in clinical fields. Therefore, it is recommended for promoting learning levels and evaluating students’ clinical learning.

Abstract:

Background & Objective: Self-directed learning readiness scale (SLRS) proposed by Fisher et al. (2001) is a self-evaluation tool containing 50 questions. The aim of the present study was to standardize SLRS for use among Nursing and Midwifery students. Methods: The statistical population of this descriptive psychometric study included all undergraduate students of Nursing and Midwifery of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (N=550). Study samples were 224 students (27% males and 73% females). The research instrument was self-directed learning readiness scale. Validity was confirmed by determining content validity and construct validity (exploratory factor analysis) and reliability was confirmed by calculating the coefficient of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha). Results: Three factors of self-management, willingness to learn, and self-control were extracted from the SLRS that could explain 34.5% of the total variance. Cronbach’s alpha for the entire questionnaire and the mentioned factors were respectively 0.92, 0.88, 0.82, and 0.79. The t-test results showed no significant difference between male and female students in regard to the total score. In addition, multi-variant ANOVA demonstrated no significant difference between male and female students in regard to self-directed learning factors. Mean and standard deviation of self-directing for all students were 176.99 and 25.41, respectively. Conclusion: Results showed that self-directed learning readiness scale has the required validity and reliability to identify self-directed learning capabilities in Nursing and Midwifery students.

Abstract:

Background & Objective: Evaluation is an essential process for educational institutions, and one of the most common methods of evaluation of teachers is evaluation by students. Students are the real customers in the educational process; therefore, their judgments should be important variables in determining teaching status of teachers. According to customer-centric principles, the consumer’s satisfaction must be met. This study assessed the validation of the current teacher evaluation form in theoretical courses. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study investigating the validity and reliability of the teacher evaluation form that is completed by students, and identifying some factors affecting student evaluations. To determine content validity of the teacher evaluation form, 20 expert teachers were selected proportional to the number of teachers of each school of the Hamadan University of Medical Sciences. To assess the reliability coefficient of the form, 189 students were selected from different schools by proportional random sampling. Results: According to the results, questions such as rate of adherence to the determined topics, providing practical application of teaching materials and the efficacy of determined assignments did not have the necessary validity score. However, the results indicated that validity of the questionnaire was acceptable. In the present study, the Spearmen-Brown correlation coefficient indicated that the teacher evaluation form did not have an acceptable reliability (r=0.456, P<0.001).Conclusion: The current teacher evaluation form has an acceptable content validity, but it does not seem reliable.
