Abstract:

Nifedepine is a calcium channel blocker used as an essential medicament for cardiac patients.Research has shown gingival overgrowth as a common side effect for Nifedepine, however this idea has also been reported as being absent in some of the cases.A total of 80 hospitalized patients were selected for this investigation. Only 50% of the patients received Nifedepine while the other half received drugs other than Nifedepine. Every effort has been made to match the cases in groups for their plaque, bleeding and calculus indices. Results indicated that gingival overgrowth to be at 52.3% experimental group while this was only 25% in control group.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate histopathological inflammation process after RCT in infected teeth of cats following the systemic injection of Penicillin G Procaine. A comparison was made on two groups of with and without drug application. A total of 30 mature, healthy cats were used in this study. One maxillary canine was left intact as control while the othe three canines were used as experimental cases. After intentional overinstrumentation, teeth were exposed to oral cavity for two weeks which then were sealed with glass ionomer and reviewed after 6 weeks. Periapical lesions were clearly seen in radiographs of all teeth. From the total, 9 Cats died and 3 were kept as positive control leaving 18 cats which were put into Three groups. Group I:6 cats were subjected to one visit RCT. Group II: recieved Penicillin G Procaine (IM) 12 hours before RCT. Group III: 6 cats had penicillin G procaine (IM) immediately after RCT. Injections were repeated every 12 hours until the animals were subject to vital perfusion. After RCT, each cat was subjected to vital perfusion at 3,24,48 hour intervals. In positive control cases, periapical lesions were induced followed by vital perfusion without RCT and / or drug application. Canine teeth with periodontium, periapical lesion and some of the normal bone, were separated from the jaw in the form of block section after the sacrification of animals. Decatcification process was performed on each sample. The rate and the type of inflammation and fibroblast prolifration were assessed to find out the differences. Results showed a higher prevalance of chronic inflammation 3 hours after RCT. while this was not the case 24 and 48 hours after RCT. The rate of inflammation and fibroblast prolifration showed no significant difference between the three groups in 3,24,48 hours following RCT.

Abstract:

Lichen planus is a common chronic mucocutaneous disease. It's association with lichen planus and diabetes mellitus was first reported by Grinspan and collegues in 1964.The prevalence of histologically approved oral lichen planus has been reported in this article. A group or 101 individuals (test group) who were suffering from diabetes mellitus (type I, and II) were selected with control group consists of 103 (age and sex matched) non-diabetic cases. Mean age of the diabetic group was 46.3 years. Results showed that Diabetes mellitus as being more common in females than males (64.6% vs 35.6%).The prevalence of oral lichen planus was 4.95% and 1.94% in the experinental and control groups, respectively. There was no significant difference between two groups in this respect (P >0.0 5).

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Zostrix (R) on the post-operative pain following root canal treatment.Forty patients with either periapical lessions of a tooth in X-ray, or tenderness in percussion were considered as requiring root canal treatmenl. Patients were randomized into 2 treatment groups. Root canal treatment was performed for both groups. Zostrix (R) was applied to the root canal during the canal preparation, in exrerimental group while control group received routine root canal treatment. Post-operative pain was recorded one day after the treatment. Results reveaded that none of the 20 patients had experienced any post-operative pain in test group while pain was reported in all 20 patients of control post-operatively. Ficsher's exact test showed a statistically significant association between post-operative dental pain and the application of Zostrix (R) during the root canal preparation.

Abstract:

Amalgam has been used for tooth restoration for atleast hundred years. During this century, investigations have been carried out to improve the existing materials and development on new ones. These efforts have culminated in the introduction of international dental amalgam specifications. In this investigation a certain type of commercially available dental amalgam in Iranian market was subjected to various tests in an attempt to correlate its clinical behaviour with the microstructure and chemical composition. Results clearly indicated the presence, in the commercial amalgam, of substantial amounts of such toxic metals as lead and cadmium. Furthermore, the microstructure of amalgam is also found to be different from what would be expected on the basis of international standards. In conclusion an urgent investigation is required for a closer control on the public distribution of non standard and potentially hazardous amalgam materials.

Abstract:

If a test result provides perfect information, the post - test probability will be 100% if the test is positive and 0 is negative, regardless of the pre-test probability. Unfortunately, few tests are able to discriminate perfectly between patients with and without disease. The discriminating ability of a test is defined by its validity (sensitivity + specificity). The way information about a diagnostic method is used must be adapted to changes in disease prevalence. Thus the probability of disease given that a test is positive, termed the predictive value positive depends not only on the ability of the test to be positive accurately and negative accurately, but also on the degree to which validity of the test is relevant for the particular patient or population. We must consider not only the probabilities of correct and incorrect diagnosis, but their consequences as well. How good is it if we treat on the basis of a true - positive test or not treat on the basis of a true negative test? How bad is it if we treat on the basis of a false positive test or not treat on the basis of a false negative test? Answers to these questions depend on the risk and benefits of treatment.

Abstract:

There is a wide clinical application of Duralay self curing acrylic resin in the field or prosthetic dental treatments. This is carried out through a direct post and core pattern fabrication. As the effect of time elapse on dimensions of Duralay acrylic pattern is not well understood, an in vitro study was designed in 1998 to evaluate the effect of time on 20 Duraly acrylic pattern in Shahid Beheshti Dental School. Late linear change of cylindrical duralay pattern were recorded with micrometer after Periods of 17 min, 1, 2, 4, 8, 24, 48 hours. Paired T-test revealed that the increase in linear shrinkage would be significantly high with elapse of time (p<0.02). Result also showed a linear correlation formula for prediction of Duralay changes in three dimensions (length, upper and lower diameter). In conclusion: It is clear that the amount of shrinkage is directly related to the acrylic volume.

Abstract:

Helicohacter pylori has been widely considered as the Key factor of Gastric ulcers and even cancers. Analysis or collected samples from oral cavity, on culture media, biochemical, nucleic and immunological reports have shown that mouth is the propable source of helicobacter pylori. Technical problems, total microbial flora of the geographicl region distribution and host responces are reported as the reasons reported for the differences in litrerature. It is know that the primary source of this bacteria is stomach with the oral cavity being the second source, and GlS at the last following elimination of this bacteria from the stomach. This article reviews different aspects as well as the possibility of the transmission of H-pylori to people who work with the oral cavity especially teeth. The role or oral cavity on the occurance and severity of the Helicobacter Pylori Infection-has also been discussed in this article.

Abstract:

Due to the high prevalence of periodontal diseases, this study was carried out to estimate the severity and prevalance of gingivitis in Tehranian pupils during 1994 - 1995.This descriptive study was performed in a multistage random sampling manner. A group of high school girl, 1080 students were selected. Oral status of each case was recorded by means of Gingival Index (GI), Debris Index - Simplfied (DI- S) and occlusal classification according to WHO recommendation. Results showed that 92.5% of the cases have some degrees of gingivitis with confidence intervals being at 91 - 94%.Severity of gingivitis was as follow: Mild 74.5% moderate 17.5% and severe 4%. DI - S was good in 36%, moderate in 55% and fair in 8.5% of the pupiles. Over all 68% of the cases presented with some degrees of malocclusion.
