Abstract: 

Introduction: One of the methods for measuring teaching effectiveness in higher education is the rate of students and faculty members. Students are the main source of teaching information quality and effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors related to the effective teaching to provide recommendations for its improvement. Research evidence related to student ratings and teaching effectiveness is reviewed. A teaching effectiveness instrument was developed to determine criterions. Material and Methods: A 28-item questionnaire was administered to 428 nursing students in nursing programs in 6 universities and colleges and factor analysis was performed to determine cluster of teaching effectiveness items.Results: The results indicated that four factors of teaching effectiveness were identified: (1) presentation of subject, (2) organizing, (3) evaluation, and (4) professional ability.Conclusion: In this article some recommendations such as equal consideration for education and research, faculty members training; sabbatical leaves, publishing of educational journals and strengthening post-graduate studies are presented.

Abstract: 

Introduction: Internal Evaluation (I.E) is not deniable in goals΄ promotion and improvement of educational department, and its members can dehiscence their department by applying of I.E and determination of the weak & strong points. Accordingly, members of medical surgical nursing department decided to perform I.E in self department from Sep. 2002 to Mar. 2003.Material and methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated criterions such as manager and equipments of department, space of clinical education, students, faculty and lesson plan & teaching programming. The markers of criterions were designed by checklist. Theoric and clinical teaching functions of faculty and space of clinical education were evaluated by questionnaire. The amounts of acquired scores at goals of a lesson and self-evaluation by students about any goal were to assess of plan & teaching programming criteria. The study samples included faculty and students of theoric lectures and nursing internships that carried out their clinical education in the medical, surgical and critical wards.Results: The mean of criterions scores ranked in “Good” class of the Gourman classification with 3.8 points. Although teaching function of faculty was in “High” ranking, but their research function descended in “More than satisfied” ranking. The majority of population of students reported lack of equipment and educational facilities classified in “Weak” ranking. In lesson plan & teaching programming, had been accord between achieved points and students views from learning amount in 45.8 percent of objectives.Conclusion: Although public higher education organization is responsibility of alteration of some criterions such as students, but department members and related faculties can gain better ranking in subsequent evaluations by remove of the barriers, weak points and undesirable markers.

Abstract: 

Introduction: Group internal evaluation of the medical education has an outstanding position in medicine. Social medicine department as an educational group and with a community –based view, evolving with training the efficient medical students, plays an important role in programming. This research has been performed to determine the output of the educational and non-educational activities and also to assess the level of the favorable factors which are effective on them. It is also important to promote the social medicine department activities.Materials& Methods: This study has been carried out in 2002 by using the accreditation pattern and the categorization of Gorman. The factors that were evaluated including; head of department, academic faculty members, field, devices and equipments. Data were collected via questionnaire, check list and then were analyzed.Totally, more than 600 criterions with the various features were evaluated.Results: The results showed that the head of department got a ranking with 2.54 points which was satisfactory. The instructors got 2.02 points in research and scientific activities, having communication with the scientific centers (2 points in borderline ranking) and also they were in a high ranking in educational history and specialized majors, behavioral pattern administrative duties, attending in university sectors .They were given a good ranking by students due to well – presenting the theoretical courses, in stagery and internship, they obtained a high satisfied score to a top ranking. The most shortage was observed in instruments and quipments in village health centers. The most appropriate situation was with regard to technical and administrative tools available in places where medical students accommodated.Conclusion: Results showed that the faculty members in social medicine department in Semnan university of medical sciences require further research activities with the other scientific centers. However, they were in a favorable situation in many criteria. Furthermore, this department needs more supports in the field of equipments and  mproving the educational activities.

Abstract: 

Introduction: the aim of this research was to evaluate of Obs & Gyn department in order to obtain scientific and experimental skills, correct judgment and quality improvement of medical education.Material & Methods: In this research accrediting pattern has been used. Obs & Gyn department started its internal evaluation on March 1998 by forming evaluating committee ending on March 2002. In this study educational-goals, therapeutic goals and research goals was evaluated. Also the statement of organization and procedure of education as well as human resources, space and equipment was evaluated. In order to collect the data, 40 different questioners were used and in each questioner evaluating records were grouped from score 1 to 5 (very good to very weak). The average record was determined and Gorman classification was used for final evaluation and analysis. Records less than 2.51 score were considered unsatisfactory.Results: In evaluation, achievements of educational goals of Obs & Gyn department with 3.5 score record and evaluation of educational procedures with 3.13 score record was grouped more than satisfactory and evaluation of educational programs of the group with 3.8 score record was grouped as strong in Gorman classifications. Therapeutic goals with 3.58 score record was grouped as good, organizational chart with 3.85 score record was grouped as good and research goals with 4.5 record was grouped as satisfactory and space and equipment and human resources with 3.90 record was as good based on Gorman's classification.Conclusion: In total, the overall score of Obs & Gyn department with 3.79 records was grouped as more than satisfactory in Gorman's classification which shows optimal status in Obs & Gyn department.

Abstract: 

Introduction: Educating of specialized man power, creation of jobs, and use of their services are among important activities of every management system. It is clear that loss of financial resources and making hopelessness morale in young and educated class of the society as alive human resources and powerful capitals can be prevented if acquisition of skill and creation of various speciality harmonize with the needs of society. Annually, the universities admit a number of young individuals to study in the field of environmental health. This admission has been largely increased since year 1996. Thus, the question of the employment of these graduates is being considered as one of the difficulties in this area. A comprehensive study was carried out with concerning to occupational situation of the graduates of this field between 1996 to 2003, in order to evaluate the situations of graduates' employment of country different programs of the field of the environmental health and investigation of its various dimensions for the purpose of the presentation of techniques for long- term planning.Material & Methods: In this purpose, from 7315 graduates with associate of arts degree, 3382 graduates with bachelor of science degree (B.S), 136 graduates with master of science degree (M.S). On the basis of statistical methods, 576, 367, and 39 graduates were selected, respectively. The analysis of data was performed using SPSS software following the distribution and completion of questionnaires. Results: The results showed that considerable percentage of graduates holding associate of arts degree (64.6%) and 42.7% of graduates holding B.S degree was unemployed pending Khordad year 1382 (2003). Percentage of unemployment rate among M.S graduates was by far less than other graduates and reached to. 8.7%. Meanwhile, the highest percentage of unemployment rate was share of female graduates holding associate of arts and B.S degree and male graduates holding M.S degree.Conclusion: To solve the problem, it is recommended to reduce the student’s admission capacity to the minimum limit of demand, to stop admission of students to the associate of arts program, to establish continuous undergraduate course of study in environmental health, and to provide necessary background for employment of the graduates of this field by enhancing the skill and academic level of the students by means of revision of the approved curriculum, teaching entrepreneurial skills, in order to discover labor market, new services and innovation of modern practices.

Abstract: 

Introduction: The main aim of internal evaluation in all aspects is to promote the quality of the affairs. Internal evaluation from the present condition during administering the process will cause the desirable feedback. It determines the level of approach to the objectives and success. It may reveal problems and difficulties.Materials and Methods: To do this, the objectives, the desirable criteria and conditions were determined at the current situation, by the members of department. Then, 14 questionnaires were designed in the field of educational quality, student evaluation organization structure evaluation and the space of educational sector and equipments. The rankings in the from of excellent, good, medium, weak and too weak were considered in the questionnaires on the basis of Likert scale by using 1-5 scores, respectively.Results: The results showed the following evaluation; educational quality (70.3%, good), student evaluation (79.84%, good) evaluation of the faculty members (73.5%, medium), man power (60%, medium), publication sector (71.4%, good), plumbing workshop (76.2%, good), laboratory (66.5%, medium) and audiovisual sector (50%, medium). Although, computer sector (63.8%, medium) setting up the pumps (51.4%, good), classroom (45.7%, weak), library and the other spaces 26.7 and 21.1, too weak), respectively.Conclusion: This study suggested the evaluation of educational quality (70.3%, good), student evaluation 79.84% good, organization structure (70.3%, good), the space of the educational sector and equipments (51.1%, medium). Generally, the internal evaluation of department was 64.4% medium.

Abstract: 

Introduction: In high education system, quality is related to job function of graduated students, performed results of research and special services, and evaluation is possible judgment about quality and achievement to educational system objectives. However, purpose of this study was enhancement of educational quality in pediatric nursing department using internal evaluation. Materials and Methods: In this study, faculty’s members of pediatric nursing department were evaluated logistic parameters (space and facilities of theory and practical education, educational aid equipments), organizational ranking (head of department and teaching members of department) and teaching – learning process (educational status of nursing students, nursing students achievement to theory and practical education objectives, and students opinions about teaching process) by utilizing an accreditation model. Data collection performed using 24 questioners with 438 criterions. Then average of all scores compared and analyzed by Gourman classification.Results: Results showed that logistic parameters ranked as “more than satisfactory” with 3.25 score, that the highest and lowest score related in order with educational aid equipments and theory education space. Organization rankings obtained 3.35 points, as “more than satisfactory” ranking. Also, teaching – learning process in pediatric nursing department ranked as “strength” with 4.05 points.Conclusion: Generally, pediatric nursing department ranked as “good” with 3.65 pts in total evaluation factors that indicates optimal status for department.

Abstract: 

Introduction: Self - evaluation performed by otoloryngologists might help to revise ENT training programs. Collecting and reviewing of viewpoints of otolaryngologists about their training status at residency period might be helpful in this regards.Material and Methods: Questionnaire survey method among otolaryngologists graduated in Iran was used in this study.Results: One third of otolaryngologists responded to questionnaires. Age range was from 32 to 76. Most of them had been graduated within two recent decades with the age between 32-76 years. 64.2% of responders supposed that the length of their trainings had been sufficient. With regard to the contents of training, most of them (69.5%) described the training as sufficient in general ENT fields, while 88.5% of them described the trainings in the rotational fields to be insufficient. Advanced ENT methods had not been adequately presented, according to 91.3% of responders. Most of responders suggested 68.3%, a 4-year ENT residency program and dissertation was reported to be useful.Conclusion: Organizing an ENT curriculum committee with regular & ongoing modifications of ENT training programs based on community needs and situations and international standards is useful. In addition, reinforcement of ENT departments with qualified academic staff and modern equipments may improve ENT residency training in Iran.

Abstract: 

Introduction: This is a quasi-experimental study which was performed to assess the effects of two educational methods, classic and critical thinking strategies, on the stable learning of nursing students in nursing and paramedicine faculty of Semnan University of medical science in year 1380. Material and Methods: Research society was consisted of nursing students, in which, seventeen students were chosen. In this study, two point gastroenterology nursing course was divided to two parts (each consist of one unit). One part was upper GI diseases nursing and other was lower GI disease nursing. Primary part was educated with classic method and secondary part with critical thinking strategies method. Post test of each part was performed independently and oneweek later at the end of each part. In order to assess the stable learning rates of students, repetition of post test of each part were done within 3 month intervals (12 week) after primary post test of same parts without pre-informing of students. Furthermore, in this study, in order to assess the effects of learning with CTS methods on critical thinking skills of students, critical thinking skills levels of students in the beginning and the end of course, evaluated with California critical thinking skills test (CCTST). SPSS software was used to analyze data.Results: Result of the research showed that high percentage of samples was female with mean age of 20.46 years old. This study also revealed that students achieved were obtained above 60% of scores of post test of same course in both methods; classic method 78.8% and CTS method 85.6% relatively. It was showed that both methods could to be cause of stable learning, but comparison of mean differences of scores of both parts, showed no significant differences. Thus, this result revealed that there were no significant differences between two methods with regard to stable learning. Comparison of means of students scores in critical thinking skills test in the beginning (10.12) and at the end (11.53) of course, showed that critical thinking skill level of students increases significantly at the end of course (p=0.001).Conclusion: The results of study showed that both methods (classic and CTS) can cause of stable learning at nursing students, but higher in CTS method generating. In addition, CTS method could improve critical thinking skills level of students.

Abstract: 

Introduction: Goal of evaluation is judgment about education quality and defines points of weak and strength, for achievement to educational goals and promotion of quality. Internal evaluation is the best method to achieve this goal performing by member of department. The purpose of this study was internal evaluation of medical – surgical nursing department of Semnan university of medical sciences for quality development.Materials and Methods: This study was preformed in the medical – surgical nursing group of Semnan university of medical sciences. Context, Input, Process, Product, Outcome (CIPP) decision making facilitation model was used and the subjects that should be evaluated were determined. The characteristics of every desirable condition and their indicators determined for input, educational process and output index were determined. Data collection method was questionnaire and checklist. Questionnaire was rating by Lickert scale from such as excellent,good, average, weakness and very weakness (1-5 score). For equipment evaluation 3 degree scale and 5 for perfect, 3 for imperfect and 1 for non – existence were used. Society and sample of evaluation were faculty members and support man power and nursing students. The final score was obtained as the average of all scores and then interpreted according to Gourman’s classification. Results: The number of group manpower got the least score (1.32), education course achieved the highest score (3.86). Students ranked high scores (4.23) to own their teachers in process of theory lessons, but teachers took low score (3.01) in clinical teaching. Output of educational system is the graduated and achievement of new knowledge. Score of graduated skills was 1 and faculty members in creating new knowledge were 2.84. Conclusion: The score of medical – surgical nursing group in all evaluated field was 2.86. Thus on the basis of Gourman’s classification it stands in higher satisfied ranking. Preparation of ogbook, specific journals and educational films, provision of PBL and group discussion workshop are suggested to improve educational quality.

Abstract: 

Introduction: Previous studies indicated that self rating or "internal evaluation" is a fundamental determinant to quality development in teaching departments and faculties. The purpose of this study was a group's internal evaluation of Dept. Physiology of Semnan university of medical sciences (SUMS) with regard to quality development of the department. Materials and Methods: This study was performed in the physiology ward of Faculty of Medicine of SUMS utilizing an accreditation model. The assessment covered five areas, namely: "educational objectives", "research activity", "organizational ranking", "teaching achievements" and "logistic parameters". Educational objective and teaching achievement were evaluated at the level of basic clerkship, third grade and third year's medical students. Research activities consisted of number of thesis's supervised, contributions made to seminars and congresses and the number of papers compiled and published in medical periodicals by the teaching staff. Organizational ranking included the head of department, the members of the organizing body, and the teaching staff of the department. Logistic parameters encompassed the manpower and personnel of different sub sectors of the department; as well as the available space and facilities of each. In questionnaires according to Likert score, five ranking scale (excellent, good, medium, weak and very weak) were used, and scores between one to five was considered to them. Organizational ranking included, six members of the organizing body, eighty six medical students in third grade, educational space and equipments and teaching and research processes.Entirely, by using questionnaires, information was obtained and on the basis of Gurman’s classification was analyzed.Results: In this evaluation dept. members and students from the view of educational and processes with score 3.43-3.74 respectively, in more than satisfied ranking. Research goals with score 4.26 in excellent ranking , educational and research equipment with score 3.43 in more than satisfied ranking , the point of view of medical students about Dept. physiology with score 3.63 in good ranking . Conclusion: Analysis of the results placed the SUMS department of physiology in the "good" class of the Gurman’s classification; indicating an overally desirable modus operandi for the department, but in some areas of the department activity were found to be suboptimal, thus, it requires further improvement.
