Abstract:

Background and aim: Cyclotides are plant polypeptides characterized by their unique cyclic cysteine knot structural motif. They are present in many plants from the Violaceae, Rubiaceae and Cucurbitaceae families. But they also have variety of biological activities, including anti-HIV, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. Because of their exceptional stability, they have attracted interest as a potential starting point material for protein engineering and drug design.Materials and Methods: The aim of this study is identification of genes encoding cyclotides from V. odorata, V. occulta, and V. ignobilis. We also study antimicrobial effect of cyclotides extracted from V. ignobilis. To reach this aim extraction of cyclotide was done by fractionation and solid phase extraction methods. Results: Findings indicate the presence of the cyclotide gene in all three plant species which studied. Examination of antimicrobial effect of partial purified cyclotide, defined S. aureus is the most susceptible bacterium among human pathogenic and X. oryzea is the most susceptible bacterium among all of studied bacteria. Conclusion: In general, it seems that it can be used cyclotide peptide in most of the viola species because of their anti-peptide property in the pharmaceutical industry. Study of cyclotide sequences shows that despite of existence of conserved amino acids in the most of cyclotides, the differences in performance are due to sequence variation.

Background & Objectives: The economic feasibility of wastewater treatment plants requires applying some methods with ability to assess the cost-effectiveness of their systems. This study aimed to determine and compare the cost-effectiveness of two types of wastewater treatment systems which are used in Kermanshah province.Materials & Methods: This is a descriptive-analytical study in which the information on the wastewater treatment plants were collected from water and wastewater companies and wastewater treatment plants operators, and the data were analyzed statistically using the SPSS software program. All costs, efficiency of treatment processes, and their cost-effectiveness index was calculated for existing systems and they were compared in terms of this ratio. Results: The results showed that, in activated sludge and natural systems, the average total efficiency, which is the result of mean removal of total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand, were respectively 76.37±18.19% and 61.69±19.02%. Also the results showed that the difference between the efficiencies of two systems was significant. The cost-effectiveness of activated sludge and natural systems were respectively obtained as 0.23 and 0.58.Conclusions: According to the results, we can say that, despite the lower efficiency, natural systems are better than activated sludge systems and have better cost-effectiveness for wastewater treatment. These results indicates the natural systems is more successful in term of cost-effectiveness, and the most important factor in this success can be attributed to lower required investments and lower maintenance costs, compared to activated sludge systems.

Background & Objectives: Printing industry with a high level of financial turnover is known as a main industry all around the world. Different hazardous factors, such as ergonomics, can be found in this industry. On the other hand, there are a variety of methods to assess ergonomic issues at the workplaces. Present study is aimed to analysis operational workers’ postures and to compare the results and concurrent validity of LUBA based on RULA results, in a printing and publication company in Qom, 2014.Materials & Methods: This study considered all operational workers in a printing industry (n=80) in ten various jobs. Rapid upper limb assessment and postural loading on the upper body assessment have been applied to assess conditions. Gathered data was analyzed by Spearman and Kappa (P<0.05) using SPSS V20.Results: All workers were aged more than 36 years old and had 15-20 years’ work experience. Results of both methods depicted that most of postures were at the second action category and needed more studies. Correlation and agreements between postures were significant (P<0.05). Also, action levels of both methods were not significantly agreed (P>0.05).Conclusion: Results illustrated acceptable correlation between different parts and reasonable agreement between wrists, elbow and shoulder’s postures, but neck’s posture and action categories agreements were not good. In addition, analyses illustrated that concurrent validity of LUBA is not acceptable in this industry. However, more researches are recommended.
