THE ROLE OF LIBRARY SCHOOLS IN FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT, A NEW REFORM IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION IN IRAN; A RESEARCH REPORT

Abstract

 Since accessing information and information retrieval skills are fundamental abilities in LIFELONG LEARNING, school libraries can have vital role in enhancing these skills in students. By integrating library programs into school curriculum and providing suitable library programs and services, they can help student develop such skills and enhance their academic achievements. This demands a reform in educational system in most countries. In Iran, the FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT PROJECT was designed to provide reform in elementary education. The ultimate aim of this project is to enhance "Learning to Learn" and foster LIFELONG LEARNING skills in students.This research is designed to discover whether this project has the potential to achieve its ultimate goal, that is, to promote LIFELONG LEARNING skills in students. It is also intended to investigate whether schools libraries have been considered as a success factor in this project.In other to solve this problem, a survey research has been conducted. The populations of this research were 29 principals of the schools involved in this project in khorasan Razavi, 29 libraries of these schools and 81 related teachers. The views and attitudes of principals and teachers were investigated. Information about the situation of 29 school libraries was gathered. Questionnaire and checklist were instruments for data gathering. Content analysis of the documents related to the FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT PROJECT, was another approach for data collection.The result shows that the beliefs of principals and teachers are different from their attitudes.Although they believe that the RESOURCE-BASED TEACHING method can support the success of the project, in practice they do not use a lot of information sources. The main reason for this is that in some schools, there is no library. In some others, according to the standards for school libraries, the libraries do not have the minimum requirements of a school library. There is no librarian with library education background in these libraries. Another reason can be related to the lack of knowledge of principals and teachers about resource based teaching methods.It can be concluded that since one of the success factors of the education which aims to prepare lifelong learners, i.e., a suitable library and library programs, has not been taken into consideration in the planning of the project, the project is not able to fulfill its aim and cannot redesigning and successful implementation of the project.
