Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of various aspects of ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE including structure, standard, responsibility, transversally, recognition, support and commitment on psychological pressures of FACULTY MEMBERS at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. Subjects and Methods: The population under study included the teaching staff at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in the academic year of 2002. A sample of 110 subjects (20 per cent of all FACULTY MEMBERS) was randomly selected. The Farsi version of Edgar Shine's (1997) questionnaire on ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE and the stress assessment questionnaire of Smith (2003) were used to collect the data. The questionnaires, originally in English, were carefully translated into Farsi and subsequently the translated forms were compared with their English version by several colleagues to ensure their accuracy. Results: Correlation coefficient of the participants scores on ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE and psychological pressure showed a negative correlation; that is, the score gained in ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE was lower under psychological pressure, although the results failed to be statistically significant. Conclusion: The results showed that, among the various studied dimensions, support had the greatest effect on stress reduction. Also, standard was positively correlated with the mean score for psychological pressure.
