Abstract

 Background and Aim: Since COAL MINEs cause pollution of water, soil, air, if notscientifically and seriously addressed to eliminate it, we will face a huge calamity ofpollution and even a threat to human health, and on the other hand, usually Evaluatingenvironmental impacts is considered as one of the optimal ways to overcome ENVIRONMENTalchallenges and achieve sustainable ENVIRONMENTal development. This study was conducted toevaluate the ENVIRONMENTal impacts of COAL MINE in the north of the Iran using the Leopoldmatrix method. Material and Method: This descriptive study was donein summer 2017 to evaluate theenvironmental impacts of the Galiran COAL MINE in the north of Iran. Data was collectedthrough field visits and checklist and analyzed by using the LEOPOLD MATRIX. Results: The total number of negative effects with the frequency of 310 effects is more inbiological ENVIRONMENT than other ENVIRONMENTs and the total number of positive effects withthe frequency of 162 is related to the socioeconomic. The analysis of coal mining datathrough the LEOPOLD MATRIX in the four studied ENVIRONMENTs showed that Galiran COAL MINEhas a negligible positive effect on the socioeconomic and has severe negative consequencesin the biological ENVIRONMENT. Conclusion: it is impossible to completely eliminate the negative effects and impacts of aCoal Mine, but it is possible to reduce the negative effect of coal mining operations, especially in the biological ENVIRONMENT, through corrective actions and non-operationalmethods in the form of an ENVIRONMENTal management program.
