Abstract

Rendering religious texts, especially THE QUR’AN, into English and selecting EQUIVALENTs for religious and Qur’anic terms are delicate processes. The lack of knowledge about the exigencies of the source and target languages may cause the translator to make errors. If the text is the miraculous divine words of Allah, the task of TRANSLATION will be more difficult. It goes without saying that as THE QUR’AN says: "If men and jinn banded together to bring the like of this Qur’an, they will not be able, even though they back each other." The problems resulting from finding proper EQUIVALENTs may be due to various factors such as the lack of knowledge of the SOURCE LANGUAGE and its culture, philology and encoding the message in the target language.Payke Noor, 1.3 4 From the author’s viewpoint, TRANSLATIONal equivalence is an experimental process rather than an ideal, because the process is influenced by different factors such as paralinguistic, cultural and discoursal ones. By considering different English EQUIVALENTs taken from religious and Qur’anic translated texts and analyzing their SEMANTIC LOAD and features, it has been elaborately attempted to explore the above-mentioned problems.
