Abstract

During the last 15 years, KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT (KM) has changed from one generation to another because of constant improvements and modern perspectives. Myriad scientists and researchers have presented frameworks, methods and technology of the KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT and discussed various practical and theoretical knowledge developments. However, KM should still bears extensive changes since it is still in its infancy. The aim of this study is exploring and analyzing KM in a different way which is surveying and reviewing the current situation and analyzing the theories of significant agreements and disagreements among researchers and practitioners in order to highlight the key issues which need more considerations.Design/method/approach: The authors of this research try to present a comprehensive review and analysis of the main agreements and disagreements among researchers and practitioners - in the field of KM – based on a wide range of references such as books, papers, published reports and related web sites.Findings: Based on the main agreements among the researchers and practitioners in the organizations, and considering the disagreements, the third KM generation should be proceeded for further investigation and research of several domains of this knowledge.Research limitations and implications – The key issues emphasized here need to be investigated more. Following the development of KM and based on focusing on knowledge a individual knowledge in 1970s and a group knowledge in 1990s the third KM generation should develop criteria in order to evaluate the frameworks, methods, approaches, a knowledge evaluation system, intellectual capital and other values. It should also use double-loop learning in management and analyse the investments and costs of KM system. Using modern technologies for transferring of explicit knowledge and applying KM in other aspects of social life will be useful too. It is necessary to clarify the different meanings of the discussed various concepts.criteria/value – One of the most significant features of this study is that it emphasizes on studying KM so broadly that it can cover the issues of both researchers and practitioners. This will direct us towards a better recognition and understanding of the basic key issues of KM.
