Abstract

Elevation of SERUM and\or ASCITES CA125 were reported in TB PERITONITIS. In this study SERUM and ASCITES CA125 were measured in the ASCITES patients with different etiology to determine if elevated SERUM and/or ASCITES CA125 is of diagnostic value for TB PERITONITIS. Fifty three ASCITES patients (9 TB PERITONITIS, 33 cirrhosis, 6 malignancy, 5 NEPHROTIC SYNDROME) and 29 controls were assessed for SERUM and /or ASCITES CA125 level. The results showed that there were no meaningful) differences in SERUM and /or ASCITES CA125 levels between TB PERITONITIS, cirrhotic and malignancy patient groups. However, the SERUM levels between TB PERITONITIS and NEPHROTIC SYNDROME patients and controls were meaning full. SERUM and /or ASCITES CA125 of all the groups except NEPHROTIC SYNDROME and controls were greatly elevated. These findings suggest that measuring SERUM and/or ASCITES CA125 is not a suitable method for diagnosis of TB PERITONITIS and this tumor marker increases in the ASCITES patients with different etiology except in NEPHROTIC SYNDROME.
