Abstract

SECURITY of TRANSPORTATION is an important and determining factor in the usage of URBAN AREAS. WOMEN are considered as being vulnerable to inSECURITY; therefore, a special study on their TRANSPORTATION in the public URBAN AREAS and the improvement of their SECURITY for the development of URBAN AREAS is essential.The main theory of this research is the following: “it seems that there is a direct relation between the number of travels and the SECURITY felt by WOMEN within an urban area.” This theory has been examined through a field study around a crowded area in the central part of Tehran (Parkshahr) and through questionnaire as well as statistical analysis via T Test and comparing the relevant histograms. Results confirm the direct relation between the two variants of ‘number of travels’ and ‘women’s sense of SECURITY’. Moreover, in the present research while studying the needs and special characteristics of WOMEN’s TRANSPORTATION through a participatory approach, the results of the analysis of applied indexes are provided in the questionnaire, including: improvement of the SECURITY of public TRANSPORTATION and the SECURITY of passengers, increase of control over the passengers and improvement of the SECURITY level for WOMEN’s TRANSPORTATION during night. Finally, some applicable measures for the realization of the above mentioned issues are presented.
