Abstract

Since the predictability, readability and innovativeness of PUBLIC PLACES can be attractive to the residents and can provide opportunities for the exchange of ideas and also for the creation of social networks, hence this paper examines the relationship between the readability of the environment and residents’ participation in public spaces in the city of Tehran. The research population consisted of all the residents of Tehran of which 5000 were selected as the sample using a cluster sampling method. Pearson correlation test, multiple regression, path analysis and cluster analysis were utilized for data analysis. Results of research show that there is a significant negative relationship between the social and physical disorderliness and participation in the public space. Significant differences were also found among the 22 regions of Tehran in terms of the different dimensions of READABILITY OF ENVIRONMENT (including POPULATION DENSITY, deviance and crime, SENSE OF INSECURITY) such that regions 1, 3 and 22 are in a better position and regions 7, 8 and 16 had undesirable position on most of these indicators.
