Abstract

This Study explored the relationship between COMMUNICATION PATTERNS of Student Couples, and the COMMUNICATION PATTERNS of their parents. The purpose of the study was to examine the intergenerational transmission of patterns of couple communication, during times of MARITAL CONFLICT. The ex-post-facto design was utilized as the research method for this study. COMMUNICATION PATTERNS Questionnaire (CPQ) was used to gather the required data. This Questionnaire is a self- report measure that addresses spouses’ behavior during three stages of conflict. Student couples of Tehran universities and their parents comprised the whole population under study. The sample involved 153 couples, 52 of whom were student couples.51 couples were the parents of the student’s wives, and 50 couples were the parents of the student’s husbands. Snowball sampling, which is a type of non- probability sampling, was used. The research data were analyzed through partial correlation approach. The findings supported the majority of research hypotheses. There was a significant positive correlation between the student couple and their parents in mutual constructive communication pattern (P<0.01). There was a significant positive correlation between the student couple and their parents in mutual avoidance communication pattern (P<0.05). The intergenerational transmission of demand / withdraw COMMUNICATION PATTERNS varied according to the sex of the student couple: the findings showed that there was a significant positive correlation between student couple and the husband’s parents in man demand / woman withdraw communication pattern (P<0.01). But there was not any significant correlation between student couple and the wife’s parents in the same pattern of couple communication. For woman demand / man withdraw communication pattern, the reverse happened. Suggestions for the application of these findings in the areas of prevention and treatment of marital problems have been proposed.
