Factors Influencing Iranian-Islamic Identity Formation in Adolescent Girls Aged 14-21: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

 Background and Objective: Iranian-Islamic identity is one of the most important psychological constructs and encompasses a set of positive attitudes toward national, religious, cultural, and social values that influence all aspects and behaviors of a person. According to theories, the best period for identity formation is adolescence, and the most significant asset for identity construction is girls and women in society. Therefore, understanding the identity formation of adolescent girls and discovering strategies for it can form the foundation of Iranian-Islamic identity for all individuals in the community. Methods: In this qualitative study, the interviewees were purposefully selected from the trainees of the Neda Center (Movement of Imam's Daughters), aged 14 to 21. The Social Identity Scale was administered to them, and those who obtained very good scores participated in semi-structured interviews until data saturation was reached, with a total of 7 participants. The interviews focused on their lived experiences from 3 to 7 years regarding their adolescence and the Iranian-Islamic identity formation years at the Neda Center. Data analysis was conducted using the Colaizzi method. Results: From the analysis of the data, 7 core themes, 20 main categories, and 103 subcategories were extracted. The core categories include: enhancing insight, religious education, revolutionary role-taking, strengthening social agency, skills development, talent cultivation, and guidance, which constitute the main factors affecting Iranian-Islamic identity formation. Conclusion: Based on the results of this research and examination of the factors influencing Iranian-Islamic identity formation, it appears that efficient identity formation models should encompass significant factors such as enhancing insight, religious education, revolutionary role-taking, strengthening social agency, skills development, talent cultivation, and guidance.
