THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL GROUP THERAPY IN IMPROVING UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ SELF-ESTEEM AND SELF-EFFICACY

Abstract

 The present study examined the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in improving college students’ SELF-ESTEEM and SELF-EFFICACY. This research was based on pretest-posttest control group. A sample of 24 UNIVERSITY STUDENTS who referred to the psychological clinic at Ferdowsi university of Mashhad with the aim of attending in cognitive-behavioral group therapy, having low scores in Coopersmith SELF-ESTEEM inventory at the screening stage, were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups (7 female and 4 male). The experimental group received eight weekly one-and-a-half-hour sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy and the control group received no specific intervention. Measurement scales were Coopersmith’s (1972) SELF-ESTEEM Scale and Shere et al’s (1982) SELF-EFFICACY Inventory. For analyzing of data, Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used. After controlling for baseline scores, the experimental group participants demonstrated significantly higher levels of SELF-ESTEEM and SELF-EFFICACY compared to the control group .It seems that cognitive-behavioral group therapy can enhance SELF-ESTEEM and SELF-EFFICACY in UNIVERSITY STUDENTS.
