Abstract

Introduction: Considering the psychological effects of cancer, the use of psychological treatments is very important in reducing the psychological effects of Breast Cancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of compassion on Quality of Life and Happiness among females with Breast Cancer in the city of Ahwaz. Methods: This research had a post-test and pre-test design. The statistical population of the study included all females with Breast Cancer in the year 2016-2017 referring to health centers of Ahwaz, among whom 24 were selected by the available sampling method. Twenty-four of the participants were randomly assigned to two groups; 12 in the experimental group and 12 in the control group. Compassion-based therapy was conducted during 12 sessions in two experimental groups. The control group was placed on the waiting list and received no intervention. The instrument used in this study was the Quality of Life Questionnaire and Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, which was answered during the last intervention session again. To analyze the results, descriptive statistics and covariance analysis were used with 0. 01 alpha. Results: This quasi experimental research with IRCT20180627040257N1 of this study indicated that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups regarding Quality of Life with average of 79. 83 ± 20. 88 and 45. 58 ± 10. 53 and Happiness with average of 92. 33 ± 16. 34 and 53. 08 ± 14. 57(P < 0. 001). Also, Quality of Life and Happiness levels in the experimental group were significantly (P < 0. 001) higher than the control group at the post-test stage. Conclusions: Compassion-based therapy has been able to increase the Quality of Life and Happiness of females with Breast Cancer. It is possible to attribute the reasons for this effect to components of compassion and kindness, and on the other hand, the exceptional process in compassion-based therapy.
