Title

DEVELOPING AND TESTING A MOTIVATIONAL MODEL FOR PREDICTING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ HOPE BASED ON BASIC PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS

Pages

  64-78

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop and test a motivational model to predict students’ HOPE based on SELF-DETERMINATION THEORY. The model argues that motivational variables underlie students’ HOPE can be either supported in the classroom by autonomy-supportive teachers or frustrated by controlling teachers. A structural equation analyze was conducted. The Participants were 416 male students aged between 15 and 17 years from Qazvin high schools. Questionnaires were used to assess perceived BASIC PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS satisfaction, behavioral regulation, and HOPE. LISREL analyses of questionnaire data showed that the perceived BASIC PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS satisfaction within classrooms fosters more self-determined forms of BEHAVIORAL REGULATIONS. These forms of BEHAVIORAL REGULATIONS in turn, predicted more HOPE in students. But students’ HOPE was predicted positively by extrinsic regulation. The findings support the model. Perceived BASIC PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS satisfaction need to take account in fostering more self determined forms of BEHAVIORAL REGULATIONS and HOPE by developing choice opportunities, increasing students’ perceived competence, and making sympathy relationship in classrooms.
