  11-17

Abstract

Background and Objective: Malassezia furfur is the causative agent of Tinea Versicolor. Due to create drug-resistant, now day the use of herbal medicines has been the subject of speculation. The aim of this study was to determination of alcoholic and aquatic extract antifungal effect of bitter olive fruit on the Malassezia furfur. Methods: Extraction was performed using simple distillation from bitter olive fruit. Wells diffusion method and tube for determination of extracts antifungal effect and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were applied, respectively. The data were analyzed with SPSS using two-way ANOVA test. P-value less than 0. 05 was considered statistically significant. Findings: Highest mean diameter of growth inhibition zone was observed around of well containing 110 mg/ml of aqueous, ethanolic and methanolic extract that were 19± 1, 29. 33± 2. 3 and 40± 1 mm, respectively. The excellent MIC was related with ethanolic extract of bitter olive fruit and equal to 390. 625 mg/ml. The extract type and concentration had a significant impact on growth inhibitory zone around fungus and anti-growth effect was better at higher concentrations (p <0. 05). Conclusion: The antifungal effect of bitter olive fruit in this research was proved. Due to human society abundant use of herbs, finding the best herbal extracts with anti-fungal effects and fewer side effects is necessary.
