Abstract

Introduction: To assess the specificity and sensitivity of magnetic resonance voiding cystoureterography (MRVCUG) for the detection of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in comparison with VCUG, and as a noninvasive alternative method in children.Materials and Methods: A total of 60 kidneys of 30 patients (1 to 11 years old) with primary clinical VUR assessed by MR studies and VCUG as standard method and the results were compared.Results: Of the 60 kidneys, 38 were refluxing on MRVCUG and 41 were refluxing on standard VCUG. There were 6 false-positive and 3 false-negative units. MRVCUG was 92.6% sensitive with a specificity of 68.4 for detecting VURs. Three false-negatives were found in mild cases (grade I and II). For grade III, IV, and V (high grade reflux), MRVCUG detected all of the refluxing renal collecting systems.Conclusion: MRVCUG can show reflux (especially high grades) with proper sensitivity without ionizing radiation or catheterization.
