Abstract

Survey in the field of Iranian, Indian and Chinese medicine customy indicate that most former and recent medicine customy philosophers understand the therapeutic benefits of consumption of leaves and stems of VISCUM ALBUM and administer them extensively the treatment of many disorders. However the therapeutic effects of VISCUM ALBUM fruit (mistletoe) is not enough evaluated. The present research is designed to study the anti- diabetic effects of MISTLETOE aqueous extract.By subcutaneous injection of Alloxan (160mg/kg body weight) 14 male Wistar RATs were become diabetic and then randomly divided into experimental and control groups (n=7). During the experimental period, the experimental RATs were received aqueous extract of MISTLETOE (0.5 g/lit) through drinking water. MISTLETOEs were collected from Mazandaran forests in north of Iran. Blood samples were collected weekly from RATs of both groups and the blood pH, the glucose, urea, triglyceride and cholesterol levels of blood serum and aceto-acetic acid level of urine were measured. The symptoms of DIABETES mellitus disease include metabolic alterations which preliminary recognized by hyperglycemia and glycosuria and then by disorders of protein and fat metabolism, followed by body weight lose, alteration of blood pH (acidosis) and other biochemical factors in internal environment. The obtaining results of the present research indicate the obvious anti- diabetic effects of MISTLETOE consumption. Because Alloxan destroys Beta cells of probably by increasing the permeability of cells plasma membrane to glucose, prevents the progressive disorders and corrects the metabolic alterations due to DIABETES.
