Abstract

Anaerobic bacteria has an important role in periodontitis and PORPHYROMONAS GINGIVALIS is introduced as a major agent. Transport of anaerobic samples to laboratory is the first step and a very critical subject in quantitative study. THIOGLYCOLLATE is usually used as a transport medium for anaerobic bacteria in Iran. In this study, we investigated the effects of time (0,1,3, and 5h) and supplements (Vit. K1, Hemin and Sodium bicarbonate) on the numbers of inoculated P. gingivalis. The results showed that just in the first hour after sampling in the THIOGLYCOLLATE (without supplement) the numbers of inoculated bacteria didn’t show significant reduction, but other conditions, the numbers of inoculated bacteria seriously reduced.The results suggest that we must use a better medium for transport of fastidious anaerobic bacteria.
