Abstract

In this Study, "A survey of ATTITUDE Toward Statistics (SATS) scale" has been used to measure ATTITUDE toward statistics before and after passing a course of SPSS. SATS consisted of four subscale including ATTITUDE to affect, cognition competence, value and difficulty of statistics. This study uses a quasi-experimental method. Thus, randomly sampled ATTITUDEs of 56 students in computer major in the Islamic Azad University of Abadan branch of measured by SATS scale. Students had registered for the course of ‘Statistical and Mathematical Software’ and were going to take a ‘Statistics and Probability’ examination in the second semester 1385-86. Alpha reliability coefficients of SATS (Persian form) for subclasses, affect, cognition competence, value and difficulty were 0.78, 0.76, 0.79 and 0.56 respectively and the reliability for the scale as a whole was 0.88. According  to paired t-test, the data analysis showed teaching statistical software after passing the statistics course improve ATTITUDE toward affect, cognition competence and value of statistics, but ATTITUDE toward difficulty did not show any significance before and after the course. Generally the ratio of total ATTITUDE’s toward statistics had improvement after passing statistical software courses (t=3.7, P<0.001).
