Abstract

In this experiment, the effect of oral administration of Cabergoline, an anti-prolactine drug on induction of fertile estrus in bitches was investigated. For this purpose, fourteen bitches from German Shepherd breeds were used in the study at their already determined periods of anestrus. Four dogs formed the control group, while 12 bitches were treatment group. All treatment famales were administered with recommended doses (5ug/day) of Cabergoline formulation marketed for use in woman. An aqueous solution of Cabergoline (casber, Pharmacia, Italy) was orally administered until 2 days after the onset of proestrus or for a maximum of 41 days. Five hundred IU of HCG was intramusculary administered to four of these dogs on days 1 and 3 of estrus. The remaining 4 dgs were not treated with HCG. Blood samples were taken once from all females during the first days of treatment and then every other day during the beginning the behavioral estrus to measure progesterone concentrations. In the treatment proestrus was incduced between days 18-39 (mean: 5/27± 5/5 days), in the ratio of 0/9 (p= 5%>) The mean duration of estrus was recorded in the experimental group (8. 6± 7. 8) days (P<0. 05). The pregnancy rate for both groups of dogs was 60%. Puppetry rates were recorded (5. 5± 0. 9) and (4. 6± 1. 8) days (P<0. 05) after calving records for HCG+ and HCG-pregnant animals, respectively. The data obtained on the incidence of pregnancy and estrus were evaluated by chi-square test and termination of treatment up to the onset of estrus symptoms by SAS software. The results showed that normal and fertility estrus is achieved using Cabergoline and HCG injection has no significant effect on pregnancy rate.
