Abstract

Background: In the present study, the effects of bilateral electrical lesions of ventral TEGMENTAL AREA, shell of NUCLEUS ACCUMBENS, central and BASOLATERAL NUCLEI of amygdale and medial prefrontal cortex on the acquisition of morephine- induced place preference has been investigated. Materials and Methods: For this purpose, rats weighting 200-250g were used. 7 days after surgical operation and producing lesion by passing electrical current into each site, conditioned place preference made by MORPHINE sulphate (0.5-7.5 mg/kg, S.C.) was applied in a biased paradigm. Results: Subcutaneous administration of MORPHINE (1-7.5 mg/kg) induced conditioned place preference in a dise-dependant manner by increasing the time spent during the test in MORPHINE- paired compartment. The results show that bilateral electrical lesions of ventral TEGMENTAL AREA, shell of NUCLEUS ACCUMBENS and central llucleus of amygdale reduce significantly MORPHINE induced place preference in comparison to their controls. Nevertheless, lesions ofbasolateral nucleus of amygdale and prelimbic area of medial prefrontal cortex did not alter MORPHINE effects in producing place preference. Conclusions: Understanding the mechanisms underlying the role of medial prefrontal cortex and its parts, also basolateral nucleus of amydala, in perceiving positive reinforcement properties of drug and non- drug treatments warrants further investigations.
