Abstract

Background: Gestational DIABETES is one of the most prevalent metabolic diseases during PREGNANCY. It may lead to high-risk pregnancies, therefore, screening and diagnosis of the disease is of utmost importance. Materials and methods: 820 rural pregnant women, in their 20-28 weeks of gestation, were selected by stepwise random sampling in Tehran province. Having the individual questionnaire filled, height and weight were measured and BMI was calculated. Blood pressure was measured at the sitting position. A 50-gr oral glucose tolerance test was carried out on all subjects. 3hr glucose tolerance test with 100 g of glucose was indicated in whom the 1hr glucose was? 140mg/dl. The diagnostic criteria for gestational DIABETES were those of NDDG. Results: 19 patients were classified as having gestational DIABETES. Mean age of the diabetic patients was 29±6 years that was significantly higher than normal subjects (24±5years). The prevalence of DIABETES was 1.8% in under 30-year old women and 4% in those over 30 years old. Mean BMI was significantly higher in diabetic patients (29±4.8) when compared to that of normal individuals (26.5±4.5). (p<0.02) Gestational DIABETES was twice higher in women who had given birth to heavier infants, it was three times higher in the mothers with the history of stillbirth, over three times higher in those with abortion (p<0.004), twice as much in the subjects with history of familial DIABETES and 4 times higher in those with multiple parity. (p<0.001) Diastolic pressure was 64±15 mmHg in the diabetics as opposed to 59±11 mmHg in the normal subjects (p<0.05), while the systolic pressure was not differed in two groups. Conclusion: The results of this study shows that women with gestational DIABETES tended to be older, weigh more, have had more pregnancies, have positive family history of DIABETES and have heavier babies than those with a normal glycemic status.
