Abstract

Introduction: With the knowledge of high incidence of nausea and vomiting after thyroidectomy, we studied the efeects of intravenous dexamethasone in prevention of those, symptomes.Methods: To evaluate the effects of I. V. Dexamethasone on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after elective thyroidectomy, 90 female patients (26-45 years-old) underwent general anesthesia were enrolled in a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study and were divided into two groups (n =45). Juct before induction of anesthesia, dexamethasone 10mg or normal saline I. V. were administrated.Results: Observation of nausea and vomiting were recorded in the first 24 hours after surgery. 36% of patients in the dexamethasone group, compared with 67% of patients in the saline group, had nausea and vomiting within post anesthesia care unit (P<0.05). 27% of patients in the dexamethasone group, compared with 44% of patients in the saline group, had nausea and vomiting within 24-h postoperative period (P<0.05). 9% of patients in the dexamethasone group, compared with 16% of patients in the saline group, received a rescue antiemetic (P>0.05).Discussion: We conclude that dexamethasone 10mg significantly decreases the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in women undergoing elective thyroidectomy and till now there are no known side effects for it.
