Abstract

Introduction: Normal breast tissue contains varying amounts of elastin fibers around interlobular ducts which increases with age. This study attempted to determine the relationship between ELASTOSIS grade and hormone receptor status in cases of INVASIVE DUCTAL BREAST CARCINOMA of varying grades. Methods: Fifty-eight formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded breast tissue specimens from invasive ductal carcinoma cases of varying grades have been studied. Elastin staining and immunostaining for ESTROGEN RECEPTOR (ER) and PROGESTERONE RECEPTOR (PR) were separately performed on the slides prepared from each block and ELASTOSIS grade, as well as status of hormone receptors was determined. Relationship of ELASTOSIS grade with the status of hormone receptors and histopathologic grade was then determined. Results: Spearman correlation test showed that ELASTOSIS grade had a positive correlation with the degree of ER. and PR positivity, but there was no significant correlation between ELASTOSIS grade and tumor grade. Discussion: The positive correlation observed in this study between ELASTOSIS grade and hormone receptors status is similar to the results obtained in most previous studies in this field. But in contrast to some of the previous studies, no correlation was present between ELASTOSIS grade and tumor grade in our investigation.
