Abstract

This paper examines the control mechanism used by the Office of Vice-Chancellor for Pharmaceutical an Treatment Affairs,Iran University of Medical Sciences over the affiliated private hospitals in 2002. The study population included hospital managers, matrons, techiJicians, and the inspectors of the Office of Vice-Chancellor. A total of 125 subjects were randomly selected. They responded to a questionnaire covering items related to four stages of control process. Data analysis was carried out through SPSS. Among the respondents,41.6o% evaluated the degree of control exerted by the Office as low before the implementation of the control mechanism, 41.6% and 54% rated it as average during and after implementation,respectively. Also 40% of the respondents rated the level of encouragement of the private hospitals participation in setting standards as low. Finally, 49.6% of the subjects rated the effect or the control mechanism of the office on the performance improvement of the private hospitals as average. The findings of the study indicate that establishing interdepartmental relationships and cooperation ofthe office of Vice-Chancellor for pharmaceutical and Treatment affairs in the implementation of the control mechanism, particularly in defining objectives and setting standards could play a crucial role in the improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the control mechanism.
