Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: VITEX AGNUS-CASTUS L. (VAC) had been used in treatment of gynecologic diseases for several centuries. Recent studies show some therapwtic effects of extracts of this plant on premenstrual syndrome (PMS), menstrual symptoms and inuease lactation in mothers. Currently reports show some anticancer effects of extract of VAC. Because of antifungal, antimicrobial and anti androgenic effects, some researchers recommend VAC as an antiacne agent. Not only extract of VAC but also fruit of this plant has therapeutic effects. Some substances with high affinity for attachment to dopaminergic receptors are derived from essence of this fruit. With regard to frequent therapeutic effects and very low side effects, study about the mechanism of function of VAC on different body systems could have helpful. Our results indicated that VAC can causes decrease of TESTOSTERONE, FSH and LH levels via dopaminergic receptors in male rats. In conclusion, probably VAC treats many disease depended on dysfunction in dopaminergic system. But this issue needs more investigations.
