THE STUDY OF PHYTOCHEMICAL, ANTIFUNGAL AND ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECTS OF TEUCRIUM POLIUM AND CICHOURIUM INTYBUS

Abstract

 INTRODUCTION: Infection diseases are the leading cause of mortality through the world. Because of great demand for pharmacological agents, especially less toxic ANTIFUNGAL agents, separation of new drugs from plants gained great importance during 90`s. MATERIALS & METHODS: In the present study, the root and aerial parts of Cichorium intybus and the aerial parts of TEUCRIUM POLIUM were extracted separately by maceration. These extracts examed phytochemically and the effect of them on the growth of some bacteria and fungi were studied.RESULTS: The result of this study showed that CICHOURIUM INTYBUS plant contains: tannins, terpenoids, leucoantocyanins, esterols and flavonoides. It was some what, effective against Esherchia coli and Pseudomona aeroginosa but did not show ANTIFUNGAL effect. In the aerial parts of TEUCRIUM POLIUM, tannins, terpenoids, saponins, esterols, flavonoides and leucoantocyanins were found. The extract was effective almost against all tested bacteria but it did not show strong ANTIFUNGAL effect. CONCLUSION: Both TEUCRIUM POLIUM and CICHOURIUM INTYBUS extracts had suitable ANTIBACTERIAL effect but not ANTIFUNGAL effect. Purification and trace of the effective components of these plants are recommanded.
