Abstract

ROTAVIRUS, the most common diarrhea pathogen in children in the entire world, causes approximately One-third of diarrhea associated hospitalizations and 1000000 deaths per year. The etiology of acute diarrhea was studied in 171 children under 6 years of age between September and-March 1993, from Ali-Asghar hospital of ZAHEDAN. 83 hospitalized and 83 healthy children in similar age groups served as controls.ROTAVIRUS was found in 29.2% of patients, 9.6% and 3.8% of controls respectively, with the highest detection rate occurring in the 19-24 month age group 55.6% and declining beyond 31-36 months of ages in patients 82% and controls 87.5%. (The rate of ROTAVIRUS infection was highest during August and September respectively 40% and 39.5% and lowest during December 11.1%. There were significant differences between ages, mother's education, and number of family with ROTAVIRUS infection diarrhea. ROTAVIRUS detection in relation to different feeding habits and sexes showed no differences.
