CYTOPATOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF HYDROQUINONE CREAM 2% ON EPENDYMAL CELLS OF SPINAL CORD IN RABBIT EMBRYO

Abstract

 The drug and chemical agents consumed by mothers during pregnancy period can cause adverse effects on their fetuses. One of the cases that make mothers use drugs is because of appearing dark spots on their skin, uglifying their faces (mask of pregnancy). The most common drug for vanishing this mask is HYDROQUINONE.In this study, cytopathological effects of HYDROQUINONE cream 2% on EPENDYMAL CELLS of spinal cord in rabbit embryo were investigated 40 Albino rabbits (32 female & 8 male) were randomly chosen. After adaptation with new environment, copulation was performed and then pregnant rabbits randomly were divided into 4 groups: The first group (control) did not receive any drugs. The second group received HYDROQUINONE cream 2% on the skin of their back in an area equal to the area of their face and neck, during pre differentiation period. The third group received HYDROQUINONE 2% during embryonic period and fourth group received the same amount of the drug during fetal period of pregnancy. Immediately after birth, newborns were anesthetized by sodium thiopenthal. After dissection, the samples were chosen from T1-L2 segments of spinal cord. These samples were fixed in 10% formalin, and after routine tissue processing, 3- 5 micrometer sections were stained with H&E: Then morphology and arragment of EPENDYMAL CELLS in central canal of spinal cord were studied by means of Light Microscope in all four groups.The second group revealed no significant difference compared to control in terms of cellular arrangement, N/C ratio and nuclear density. In the third and fourth groups, disarrangenent of cells, pyknosis of plenty of nuclei and apoptosis was observed.The strike effects of HYDROQUINONE on morphology of ependymal cell show the possibility of adverse effects of this drug on the function of the aforementioned cells, CSF production and resorption and CNS function. Therefore, the prescription of this drug during pregnancy should be done with caution.
