Title

READING AND WRITING SKILLS AMONG FARSI SPEAKING FIRST GRADERS TAUGHT BY THE COMPOSITE METHOD

Abstract

 In this study the skills of those first graders who have been taught how to read using the composite method of sound- word were assessed in both sounding and word READING areas. The randomly selected sample consisted of 100 students who had just started the second grade and were observed transitionally. The READING tasks utilized in this study were READING unfamiliar texts, READING IRREGULAR WORDS, READING word look-alikes, and dictation which was designed by the researchers based on the first grade READING textbook.Students performed within the normal range of 3-4 errors in READING the text, the word look- alkies, and the IRREGULAR WORDS. However their READING speed was rather low as they took close to 2 seconds to read IRREGULAR WORDS. This could be indicative of their ability to use the SOUNDING TECHNIQUEs better than the whole word READING technique.The dictation scores were significantly lower than the READING scores and the girls scored better on READING text, IRREGULAR WORDS, and dictation than the boys, but not on the READING of word look – a likes!
