CORRELATION OF NURSE MANAGERS' DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS WITH THEIR LEADERSHIP STYLES IN EDUCATIONAL HOSPITALS OF HAMADAN CITY IN 2014

Abstract

 Introduction: NURSE MANAGERS’ effective leadership style could motivate and satisfy nursing personnel and enhance efficacy and productivity in educational hospitals, and consequently promote the level of community health. This study aimed to investigate the correlation of NURSE MANAGERSDEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS with their emotional intelligence in educational hospitals of Hamadan city, Iran.Methods: A correlation descriptive study was conducted on 370 NURSE MANAGERS of five educational hospitals (Besat, Farshchian, Beheshti, Fatemieh and Ekbatan) of Hamadan city. Metzcus and Burden’s LEADERSHIP STYLES questionnaires were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as Pearson’s correlation coefficient, T-test and variance analysis.Results: NURSE MANAGERS had dominant people-oriented (laissez-faire) (10.45 ± 2.07 out of 15), task-oriented (autocratic) (12.25±3.04 out of 20) and democratic (7.78±1.27 out of 11.7) LEADERSHIP STYLES, respectively in educational hospitals of Hamadan. Moreover, there were significant correlations in age, marriage status, work experience, managerial experience, income level, and employment with NURSE MANAGERS LEADERSHIP STYLES (P<0.05).Conclusions: DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS of NURSE MANAGERS should be considered according to their crucial roles in enhancing the efficacy and productivity of educational hospitals in selection processes. Furthermore, it seems essential to consider democratic leadership style as an effective style for enhancing the productivity and morale of nursing personnel at in-service educational programs for NURSE MANAGERS.
