Abstract

This paper deals with the problem of MARKEDNESS in TRANSLATION of ENGLISH spoken texts into PERSIAN. The data was collected by applying the principles of Grzegork's and Halliday'smodels to the popular series, Lost, and its PERSIAN subtitled TRANSLATION as the corpus. In this study a functional sentence perspective view was taken and clause was regarded as the unit of analysis. After identifying ENGLISH marked THEMATIC STRUCTUREs, they were compared with their PERSIAN equivalents. The results demonstrated that constructions with a fronted time or place adjunct proved to be the least challenging while constructions with a fronted predicator showed to be the most challenging to PERSIAN translators. Taking into account all types of marked constructions, it was observed that half of the ENGLISH marked thematized constructions were translated as marked themes and the other half as unmarked themes. Four approaches in rendering ENGLISH marked thematized constructions into PERSIAN were found to be at work: translating as the same marked THEMATIC STRUCTUREs, translating as equivalent but not necessarily identical marked THEMATIC STRUCTUREs, translating as unmarked themes, and omission.
