Background & Objective: Learning and its improvement are the foundation of all activities in educational systems. One of the most important effective factors on students’ learning is their learning style. Being aware of the learning style used by students, help teachers to assist the students for a better use of different learning styles; On the other hand, teachers can change their own educational style according to the students’ learning style to reach maximum level of efficacy. This research was performed in order to identify medical students’ learning styles in 2007.Methods: In this descriptive study, a questionnaire including demographic questions and Kolb Learning Style Inventory was distributed amongst all medical students who were attending the first semester of 2007 in Birjand University of Medical Sciences. This tool allows classification of learning styles into 4 groups: converging, accommodating, assimilating, and diverging. Results: Among 267 distributed questionnaires, 175 were filled by students. 68 percent of students were female, mean (±SD) age of the students was 22(±2.5) and their grade point average was 16.5(±1.5). The most prevalent learning style was converging (52%) followed by assimilating (28.6%), diverging (9.7%) and accommodating (9.7%). There was no significant relationship between learning style and age, sex, educational level, and grade point average. Conclusion: Considering that people with converging learning style are competent in solving problems, it necessitates that teachers at universities change their traditional methods into new ones like Problem Base Learning (PBL) and Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) so that they help students learn immense medical information.

Abstract:

Introduction: Recently, the study of the impact of art on human performance has attracted many researchers. Also, art can improve academic performance and personal growth of medical graduates. At the same time, little attention has been paid to the role of art in medical education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of art in medical education from the viewpoint of Birjand University of Medical Sciences students and to analyze the students' practical approach to using art and their different attitudes about the successful and effective impact of art on education. Materials and Methods: The descriptive-analytical research was performed on Birjand University of Medical Sciences students in 2018-2019. Valid and reliable questionnaires were made available to students electronically (mobile application). Results: 101 students including 38 male students and 63 female students were included in the study. The results showed that 27% of students were pursuing a particular artistic discipline. Over 80% of students were engaged in an artistic activity while studying, in this issue, music was introduced as the most effective art. The students also agreed to the integration of art in the curriculum and its infrastructure development. Conclusion: taking advantage of the arts to learn is part of the students' daily schedule, yet no formal action has been taken. On the other hand, medical humanities as the basis of the art integration in medical education require a serious introduction and practical attention.

Abstract:

Introduction: In medical education, the successful implementation of a well-designed curriculum is critical for the development of competent healthcare professionals. The basic medical sciences can provide a foundation for physicians and a comprehensive understanding of the basic concepts in clinical practices. As such, the quality of curriculum implementation in this vital area requires careful evaluation. This study endeavored to evaluate the quality of the curriculum implementation of basic medical sciences from the view of medical students. Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted among students at Birjand University of Medical Sciences in 2021-2022 academic years. Stratified random sampling was employed. The sample size was 183 medical students. The instrument was a researcher-made questionnaire and after completing the questionnaire, the results were analyzed.   Results: It was found that the quality of the goals (3. 038±0. 66, p=0. 43) and teaching strategies (2. 91±0. 76, p<0. 1) of basic science is in the intermediate level. The educational content (3. 156±0. 65, p<0. 01), facilities, and equipment of the curriculum (3. 18±0. 74, p<0. 001) were evaluated as favorable. However, the quality of learner activities (2. 85±0. 93, p=0. 03), time (2. 62±0. 84, p<0. 0001), educational space (2. 88±0. 81, p=0. 04), learning groups (2. 64±0. 97, p<0. 0001), and evaluation (2. 83±0. 67, p<0. 001) was unfavorable. Although the students' gender did not affect the evaluation of the curriculum, the students with a higher academic grade evaluated the quality of the curriculum significantly more favorably. Conclusion: The results of the evaluation indicated the undesirability of some evaluation components, from the student's view. It seems indispensable to make an educational policy regarding the educational environment and the development of teachers for the optimal implementation of the curriculum.

Abstract:

Background & Objective: By using internal and external evaluation of educational status, universities can define their strengths and weaknesses; meanwhile they can select appropriate strategies to improve quality of education. This study was conducted to determine effective educational and demographic factors in Birjand medical students’ success and failure in basic sciences comprehensive exams. Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, ranks and grades of the exams of all courses and the mean score of basic sciences comprehensive exam of 150 students were extracted from their educational files. Their opinions about effective factors in achieving success in exams were collected using a questionnaire. Results: According to our findings, unmarried, young students, with regional quota and length of basic science duration less than 2.5 years, having a Grade Point Average equal or more than their total average were more successful in comprehensive exams. The ranking of the university changed from acceptable and moderate to very good in courses of insectology and histology while in anatomy, public health, parasitology, theology, and virology it changed from moderate to very good. The acceptance rate in this university was 93 to 100%.Conclusion: The educational policies of the university have motivated a forward growth in the students' academic achievement. According to the students’ point of view, certain factors such as better and more serious planning, following educational discipline, using references introduced by the ministry, and urging students to use books rather than simple notes are effective on students' success.

Abstract:

Introduction: Research self-efficacy is the main factor influencing successful administration and pursuing of research by postgraduate students. This study aimed to determine research self-efficacy among postgraduate students at Birjand University of Medical Sciences (BUMS) in 2015-16. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 master and PhD students at BUMS in 2015-16 academic year who were selected by census method. Data were collected by means of Phillips and Russell’ s research self-efficacy questionnaire whose validity and reliability had already been confirmed. The collected data were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression. Results: A total of 154 questionnaires were analyzed. The average age of students was 30. 51± 6. 3 years. The mean score of research self-efficacy was 180. 43± 53. 1 (out of 297) and showed a significant difference in terms of education and marital status being significantly higher in PhD students (223. 24± 18. 84) and single students (189. 45± 33. 52). However, no significant difference was found in research self-efficacy scores in terms of gender, residential status, and faculty. There was a significant direct relationship between grade point average and research self-efficacy (r=0. 290, p=0. 0001). Conclusion: The results showed that the research self-efficacy of the postgraduate students at BUMS was at an average level and appropriate educational interventions are required to enhance research self-efficacy.

The sample of 100 teachers are University of Medical Sciences were selected randomly. The tool included a researcher-made questionnaire with 20 items on Likert scale with a reliability coefficient of 0.89 (CVI=0.93). The questionnaire was distributed among faculty members, and the collected data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 16).Results & Conclusion: The findings showed that the average score of knowledge sharing was 67±15.17 and that 80% of them were in a desirable state In terms of knowledge sharing. To foster the learning culture of the faculties, consideration should be made of all influencing factors such as knowledge management infrastructure, identification of obstacles to knowledge sharing and their removal, the development of management policies with an aim to strengthen teamwork, and encouragement of faculties to share knowledge strengthened by the development of evaluation incentives based on group work.
