Abstract: 

روش نوارهای کاغذی پوشیده شده با اکسید آهن میتواند به صورت ممتد فسفر را از محلول خاک جذب کند. در این روش مکانیزم عصاره گیری فسفر احتمالا شبیه مکانیزم جذب فسفر به وسیله گیاه است. هدف این پژوهش ارزیابی روش نوارهای کاغذی پوشیده شده با اکسید آهن در برآورد فسفر قابل جذب خاک در گیاه ذرت رشد کرده در گلخانه، در تعدادی از خاک های همدان بود. مقدار فسفر در 16 نمونه از خاک های استان همدان با ویژگی های فیزیکی و شیمیایی متفاوت توسط عصاره گیرهای اولسن، کاول ول، مهلیخ 1، کلرید کلسیم 0.01 مولار، بی کربنات آمونیوم دی تی پی ای، اسید کلریدریک 0.1 مولار و دو روش نوارهای کاغذی تعیین شد. دوازده نمونه از این خاکها در یک آزمایش گلخانه ای با گیاه ذرت شامل دو سطح فسفر (صفر و 250 میلی گرم فسفر در کیلوگرم خاک) به کار رفت. نتایج این پژوهش نشان داد که فسفر عصاره گیری شده توسط روشهای فوق به ترتیب زیر کاهش یافت: اسید کلریدریک 0.1 مولار، مهلیخ 1، کالول، اولسون، روش اول نوارهای کاغذی، بی کربنات آمونیوم دی تی پی ای روش دوم نوارهای کاغذی، کلرید کلسیم 0.01 مولار. فسفر استخراجی به روش اول نوارهای کاغذی هم بستگی معنی داری با عصاره گیرهای شیمیایی داشت، درحالیکه بین فسفر استخراجی به روش دوم نوارهای کاغذی و فسفر استخراجی با عصاره گیرهای شیمیایی هم بستگی معنی داری وجود نداشت. بین فسفر استخراج شده به روش شیمیایی همبستگی معنی داری وجود داشت. نتایج کشت گلدانی نشان داد که فسفر عصاره گیری شده به روش اول نوارهای کاغذی هم بستگی معنی داری با شاخصهای جذب فسفر و عملکرد نسبی داشت. فسفر عصاره گیری شده به روش های شیمیایی به جز کلرید کلسیم 0.01 مولار همبستگی معنی داری با عملکرد نسبی و پاسخ گیاه داشتند، ولی با شاخصهای جذب و غلظت فسفر همبستگی معنی داری نداشتند. همچنین نتایج این پژوهش نشان داد که روش اول نوارهای کاغذی میتواند به عنوان عصاره گیر فسفر قابل جذب استفاده شود.

Abstract: 

نان غذای اصلی اغلب مردم ایران و تامین کننده بخشی اغظم کالری و پروتئین دریافتی آنها در شهر و روستا میباشد. متاسفانه به دلیل مصرف آرد با درصد استخراج بالا و عدم رعایت شرایط مناسب تخمیر، میزان اسید فیتیک درنان های ایران زیاد است. اسید فیتیکی جذب و دسترسی به عناصری مانند کلسیم، آهن، روی ، منیزیم، کرم، مس و حتی پروتئین, کربوهیدرات و چربی را در بدن مختل میسازد و موجب سو تغذیه ناشی از کمبود این عناصر به ویژه کم خونی فقر آهن میشود. در پژوهش حاضر نخست با استفاده از آرد با درصد استخراج های متداول نان های سنگک و لواش ماشینی تهیه گردید و میزان اسید فیتیک در آنها تعیین شد. سپس اثر تیمارهای مختلف مانند مقدار مخمر، زمان تخمیر و درصد استخراج روی اسید فیتیکی نان بررسی گردید. با توجه به کاهش مقدار اسید فیتیک و حفظ خواص تکنولوژیک بهترین تیمارهای نان انتخاب و بر روی آنها آزمونهای اندازه گیری پروتئین، خاکستر، چربی و رطوبت، آزمونهای ارزیابی کیفیت تغذیه ای مانند تعیین میزان آهن و لیزین قابل استفاده و همچنین و همچنین ارزیابی ارگانولپتیک (بافت، رنگ مغز و پوسته، طعم و بو) انجام شد.نتایج نشان داد که حذف کامل اسید فیتیک از نان های لواش و سنگک در این شرایط غیر ممکن اس، ولی در مورد نان لواش ماشینی تیمار 2.5 درصد مخمر، 4 ساعت تخمیر و مخلوط 50:50 آردهای81 و 86.5 و درصد استخراج ودر مورد نان سنگک تیمار 2.5 درصد مخمر،4 ساعت تخمیر و مخلوط 50:50 آردهای86.5 و 97.5 درصد استخراج از نظر میزان اسید فیتیک کاهش قابل ملاحظه ای داشتند و از نظر حفظ خواص تغذیه ای مشخص شد که مقدار لیزین هر یک، مشابه مقدار آن در نان های شاهد و مقدار آهن قابل استفاده در این تیمارها بالاتر از نانهای شاهد بود. در ارزیابی ارگانولپتیک تفاوت معنی داری در سطح 5 درصد بین نانهای حاصل از تیمارهای فوق و نانهای شاهد ملاحظه نشد و همچنین از نظر توجیه تکنولوژیک و اقتصادی، این تیمارها بهترین تیمارهای آزمایش شناخته شدند.

Abstract: 

کانیهای رسی شایسته بررسی دقیقی هستند، زیرا در بسیاری از خاک ها نقش مهمی بازی می کنند. شناسایی کانی های رسی پنج خاک گچی از زمین ریخت های مختلف در شرق اصفهان با استفاده از پراش اشعه ایکس[ x-ra diffraction XRD ]مورد بررسی قرار گرفت. علاوه بر این، خاکدانه ها و رسوب های فرسایش یافته بادی به وسیله میکروسکوپ الکترونی روبشی Scanning electron microscopy مشاهده و با اسپکتروفتومتری اشعه ایکس Energy dispersive x-ray analyzer تجزیه گردید. نتایج نشان میدهند که در همه نیم رخ های خاک، کانی های پالیگورسکیت، میکا، کائولینیت، کلریت و کوارتز و به مقدار ناچیز ورمی کولیت و کانی های مخلوط نامنظم وجود دارند. اسمکتیت در خاک های دشت دامنه ای و تراس قدیمی رودخانه شناسایی شد ولی در خاکهای مخروطه افکنه دیده نشد. احتمالا کانیهای کلریت، کائولینیت، میکا و کوارتز از مواد مادری به ارث رسیده اند. به نظر می رسد که کانی پالیگورسکیت در خاک های مخروط افکنه با عمق افزایش، در حالیکه در خاک های تراس قدیمی رودخانه، با عمق کاهش می یابد.بخش زیادی از پالیگورسکیت موجود در خاک های مخروط افکنه در پایان دوره ترشیاری موقعی که منطقه توسط برکه های کم عمق و خیل شور پوشیده بود به صورت خود تشکیل ایجاد گردیده است. منشا پالیگورسکیت درخاک های تراس قدیمی ماهیتا آواری میباشد و منشا بادی پالیگورسکیت نیز متحمل است، زیرا که در افق های سطحی این خاک به مقدار زیاد شناسایی گردید. درخاک های تراس قدیمی، افزایش اسمکتیت با عمق در مقایسه با کاهش پالیگورسکیت، به خود تشکیل اسمکتیت از پالیگورسکیت نسبت داده می شود.

Abstract: 

آزمایشهایی در طول سالهای 76-1375 در منطقه نوق رفسنجان به منظور بررسی تاثیر نوع گرده و گرده افشانی دوگانه بر تشکیل و رشد و نمو میوه پسته به اجرا درآمد. در آزمایش اول رقم اوحدی با ترکیبی دو گانه از گرده های بنه، آتلانتیکا و سلطانی (پسته اهلی) گرده افشانی گردید. در آزمایش دوم رقم اوحدی به وسیله گرده گونه های بنه، آتلانتیکا، گلخونگ، سلطانی (پسته اهلی) به طور جداگانه گرده افشانی گردید. نتایج آزمایش گرده افشانی به دو گانه نشان داد که وزن خشک میوه، بذر و تشکیل میوه به میزان زیادی تحت تاثیر گرده اول قرار گرفتند. گرده گونه های وحشی، وزن مغز، درصد خندانی را کاهش و پوکی و بدفرمی را در رقم اوحدی افزایش دادند. نتیجه گرفته شد که اثر بخشی گرده اول بر تشکیل میوه، وزن خشک میوه و نمو بذر مستقل از گرده دوم میباشد و نوع گرده اول به میزان زیادی تعیین کننده تشکیل میوه در پسته است. همچنین ثابت شد که گرده پسته اهلی مهم ترین منبع دانه گرده برای ارقام پسته می باشد.

Abstract: 

The vast pastures and agricultural development plans for dry farming and irrigated farming in Khuzestan Province depend on rain. This requires availability of annual precipitation prediction models to be used in the management decision-making process. In this research, the long-term daily precipitation data from 15 rain gauge stations in the study area were collected for study and a relationship between the early fall season precipitations of 42.5 mm (t__42,5) and the annual precipitation was obtained. The results showed that the relationship was an inverse one such that the later the fall precipitation occurred, the greater the annual precipitation would be. To increase the coefficient of determination in the models, climatic variables such as Persian Gulf sea surface temperature and geographical characteristics (longitude, latitude, altitude, and long term mean annual precipitation) were used. Except for the long term mean annual precipitation and altitude, other variables did not increase the coefficient of determination. The final simple model found is as follows: P__a=184.787-1.891 t__42.5+0 .855 P__m. , R^2=0.704 where, P__a is the annual precipitation, t__42.5 is the time from beginning of fall season for 42.5 mm of precipitation, and P__m is the long term mean annual precipitation.

Abstract: 

Numerous methods are used in the investigation of floods in catchments such as regional flood frequency analysis. Regional flood frequency analysis relies on physical, climatic and ecological characteristics of catchments and applies statistical methods to study flow records. Hosking and Wallis developed Probability Weighted Moments and presented L-moments statistics as a new tool for flood frequency analysis. In this paper, the theory of L-moments was used to study the flood frequency of central catchments of Iran. A number of 27 sites each with more than 5 years of observed data were studied. In the first step, the diagram of L-kurtosis versus L-skew ness was used and proper distributions for each site were applied. In order to eliminate the heterogeneous sites, homogeneous tests based on D, H,, HZ and H3 criteria were performed indicating that two sites appeared to be heterogenous. Next, using Goodness of Fit Test, the best regional distributions were determined which are GL, GEV, GN, PE3 and GPA, respectively. Finally, quantile estimates for distributions accepted at a 90% level were presented.

Abstract: 

In Iran, about 75% of national rice production is supplied in Gilan and Mazandaran proviences which have the highest amount of precipitation. Seasonal prediction of rainfall induces significant improvement on yield production and on preventing climate hazardz over these feritle areas. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) model was carried out evaluates the possibility of the prediction of winter rainfall according to the states of ENSO events. The time series of (southern oscilation index (SOI) and SST (sea surface temperature) over Nino"s area (Nino"s SST) are used as the predictors, and precipitation in Bandar Anzali and Noushahr are used as the predictands. Emperical orthogonal functions (EOF) were applied for reducing the number of original predictors variables to fewer presumably essential orthogonal variables. Four modes of variations (EOF1, EOF2, EOF3, EOF4) which account for about 92% of total variance in predictors field were retained and the others were considered as noise. Based on the retained EOFs and precipitation time series, the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was carried out to predict winter precipitation in Noushahr and Bandar Anzali. The results indicated that the predictors considered account for about 45% of total variance in the rainfall time series. The correlation coefficients between the simulated and observed time series were significant at 5% significant level. For 70% of events the anomalies of observed and simulated values have the same sign indicating the ability of the model for reasonable prediction of above or below normal values of precipitation. For rainfall prediction, the role of Nino"s SST (Nino4 in particular) was found to be around 10% more influential than SOI.

Abstract: 

An approach for regional low flow frequency analysis is to use multiple regression techniques for obtaining relationships between low flows with specific return periods and catchments characteristics. In this paper, this method has been used. After single-site frequency analysis for 20 stream gauging stations, homogeneity test was performed. Regional relationships between low flows with return periods 2 , 5 , 10, and 20 years and catchments characteristics were derived. For this purpose, catchment area, mean elevation, minimum elevation, shape factor, main channel length, length of main channel from catchment centroid to outlet, forest area, mean annual rainfall, and mean catchment slope as model inputs were examined and catchment area, mean elevation, and mean catchment slope entered to the models. Finally, the mean relative error of models for different return period, 2, 5, 10, and 20 years, was computed 41.1, 41.3, 45.0, 47.2 percent, respectively that in comparison with other studies, it displays smaller errors.

Abstract: 

Point data of weather stations are not important in and by themselves. Therefore, it is necessary. to change these point data into regional information. Undesirable distribution of weather stations and their data deficiency hinder the direct determination of the regional information, unless sufficient data in the study area could be provided. Providing extra data using the geostatistical methods is practical, scientific, simple and quick, but adopting a suitable method is the basic question. The objective of the present study is to find a suitable method to estimate monthly rainfall in the central region of Iran. In this regard, the methods of kriging (ordinary kriging, log-kriging, co-kriging), weighted moving average (WMA, with the power of I to 5), thin plate smoothing splines (TPSS, with the power of 2 and 3 and with covariable) were used. Cross validation technique was used to compare these methods. Based on the variography analysis, the range of influence of monthly rainfall in the central region is about 450 km. The results show that TPSS, with the power of 2 and with elevation as a covariable, was the most accurate method to estimate monthly rainfall. In addition, it is preferable to use the selected interpolation method in the sub-basins with homogeneous climates instead of considering the whole region.

Abstract: 

Increasing application of herbicides such as atrazine raises concerns about soil and groundwater pollution. This study investigated spatial and temporal variation of atrazine concentration and its transportation in the Daneshkadeh soil series (Fine, mixed, mesic, Calcixerollic Xerochrepts) at the experimental field of Agricultural College, Shiraz University. The risk of soil and water contamination due to applying atrazine was also assessed. The PRIM-2 model was evaluated for the simulation of the atrazine concentration. The experiment had 3 plots, 209 m^2 each (19 by l 1 m). Atrazine was applied on corn at a rate of 3.5 kg a.i./ha per plot. During the growing season, soil samples were collected from each plot 7 times through 1 m soil depth with 0.10-m increments. The observed data showed temporal reduction of atrazine concentrations in the soil profile. The maximum depth of atrazine traced was about 50 cm below the soil surface. Statistical parameters ME, RMSE, EF, and CRM were obtained to compare PRZM-2 predicted and observed soil residue concentrations. For all data, the mentioned parameters were calculated and found to be 2.78 mg/kg-soil, 12.73 mg/kg-soil, 0.49, and 0.25, respectively. The simulation results were in close agreement with the observed data. Therefore, PRIM-2 could be used for simulation of atrazine transport and groundwater pollution.

Abstract: 

Germination of strawberry seeds from self- and cross pollination of 4 commercial cultivars were evaluated under mist and in vitro cultures. The study was conducted in McGill University in Quebec, Canada, during 1994 and 1995. Self pollination of Chambly and Redcoat cvs., and cross pollination of Oka × Chambly as well as Redcoat × Veestar and their reciprocals were used. At maturity, fruits were harvested and their seeds were separated. A sample of each seed lot was grown in greenhouse under mist condition and in vitro using MS medium. In the latter, both intact and cut seeds were used. Germination index (containing germination velocity and rate) was used as a criterion for germination evaluation. The results showed that there was no sign of germination in intact seeds 40 days after cultivation on MS medium; however, cut seeds containing plantlets started germination 2 days after cultivation and obtained 90 percent of the germination after one week of culturing on the medium. Germination of seeds under mist condition began 15 days after sowing and showed a minimum of 55 to 87 percent in different genotypes till the end of the experiment period (60 days). Germination index (GI) under this condition ranged from 15.4 to 26.1. GI comparison of seeds under in vitro and mist conditions indicates a lower germination rate in different genotypes under mist condition. This study also showed that the rate of germination in strawberry seeds could range from 0 to 100 percent depending on genotype and type of treatment used. The best treatment for a synchronized and rapid germination was found to be using cut seeds containing the plantlets on MS medium.

Abstract: 

The study of geographical extent of precipitation pattern is important because of its impact on agriculture, water resources, tourism, industry, dams, and irrigation. The principal component analysis (PCA), as an elegant mathematical tool, was applied for the regionalization of winter precipitation in central south Iran (Fars, Boushehr, and Kohgiloye and Boyerahmad Provinces). Averaging monthly rainfall data of Dey, Bahman and Esfand (20 December to 20 March) produced the time series of winter rainfall. In each individual station, correlation matrix of the normalized data was then performed for the computation of the standard PCA. Eigenvalues, eigenvectors, PC time series and the loading of the principal components were then computed. The Screet test technique was applied as a trial for addressing the problem of determining the number of PC modes that should be retained. Two of the first PCs, which account for 68.1% of total variance in the rainfall data, were kept and used for the regionalization of rainfall data. The rotation solution was then selected as a suitable tool for delineating the rainfall region associated with the retained PCs. The results indicated that for the first PC, loading became high over most part of the study area. Therefore, the time series of PC 1 that accounts for about 60.4% of the variance in raw data, could be used as the regional time series of winter rainfall over most parts of the provinces studied. The second PC revealed a high loading over a small area in northern part of the regions studied (Bavanat in Fars Province). Rainfall in this station showed poor correlation with the precipitation over the neighboring station in Fars Province. It seems that the rainfall in Bavanat is mostly influenced by the Mediterranean air masses entering the area through the northern and western districts. For the other parts of the regions studied, Sudan current which encroaches the country through southwestern borders (Persian Gulf regions) make up an essential portion of winter rainfall.

Abstract: 

The possibility of using a steel plant by-product (converter sludge) as an iron fertilizer was investigated. This compound consists of 64% Fe oxides. Considerable amounts of elements such as Ca, Si, Mn, P, and K are also present in the sludge. To study the converter sludge, an incubation experiment was carried out on three calcareous soils. Treatments were 0, 4, and 8 percent of converter sludge mixed with soils plus mixtures of 4% converter sludge with elemental sulfur, thiobacillus inoculum and sulfuric acid. Soil samples (400 g) were kept at field capacity and room temperature in capped, aerated plastic containers for two months. Sub-samples were taken at 1, 10, 30, and 60 days of incubation and analyzed for Fe, Mn, Zn, P, and K contents as well as EC and pH. Results showed that converter sludge increased significantly extractable Fe proportional to the rate of sludge used. Sulfuric acid application increased Fe availability significantly, but the availability of this nutrient generally decreased with the incubation time. Application of the sludge also increased the pH slightly at the beginning of incubation. Elemental sulfur and sulfuric acid application increased Fe and Mn availability significantly. Application of the sludge without and with elemental sulfur and sulfuric acid slightly increased availability of P. The results of this study revealed that converter sludge might be used as an iron fertilizer. However, further investigation in greenhouse and field experiments is needed.

Abstract: 

Clay minerals have considerable effects on physico-chemical properties of soils. Using different techniques, mineralogy of silicate clays and their formation were investigated in selected soils from Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province. The study area is about 1300 ha and its soil moisture and temperature regimes are xeric and mesic, respectively. Geomorphologically, the area consists of different landforms including pediments, outwash, hills and piedmont plain. After field and laboratory studies, five representative pedons were selected in previously determined mapping units and samples were taken for the analyses required. Clay particles from two surrounding rock formations and selected soil samples were separated and examined by electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), X-ray diffraction and infrared techniques. Illite, smectite, chlorite, palygorskite and kaolinite were present in all the soils. Considering the fact that palygorskite was not observed in nearby rock formations, this mineral is probably formed by pedogenic processes. Smectite, on the other hand, has been inherited from parent materials and also transformed from palygorskite. Other minerals had been probably inherited from parent materials. Infrared spectra confirm the X-ray diffraction and submicroscopic results.

Abstract: 

Clay minerals deserve special attention as they play a crucial role in many soils. The clay mineralogy of five Gypsiferous soils from different landforms in eastern Isfahan was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, soil aggregates and wind-deposited sediments were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX(. The results indicate the presence of palygorskite, mica, kaolinite, chlorite, and quartz with a trace amount of vermiculite and randomly interstratified layers in all soils. Smectite occurs in soils of both the piedmont plain and old river terrace, but not in the alluvial fan soils. Mica, chlorite, quartz, and kaolinite were probably inherited from the parent material. Palygorskite seems to increase with depth in the alluvial fan, whereas, in the old terrace soils, this clay mineral decreases with depth. Palygorskite present in alluvial fan soil appears to have been formed authigenically when the basin was covered with shallow hyper-salute lagoons toward the end of the Tertiary. Palygorskite in the old terrace seems to be mostly detrital and an eolian origin of palygorskite is likely because a large amount of palygorskite is present in upper soil horizons. A higher proportion of Smectite in deep soils of the old terrace, as compared with palygorskite, suggests the possibility of authigenic formation of Smectite from palygorskite.

Abstract: 

Iron oxide-coated strips (P__i) can serve as a sink to continuously remove P from solution. In this way, probably, P extraction is analogous to P absorption by plant root. The objective of this study was to evaluate the iron oxide-coated paper strips to estimate the availability of soil P of corn (Zea mays) grown under greenhouse conditions in some soils of Hamadan Province. Sixteen soil samples with different physico-chemical properties were examined for available P by Olsen, Colwell, Mehlich1, 0.01 M CaCl2, AB-DTPA, 0.1 M HCl methods and two (P__il, P__i2) P__i methods. Furthermore, the effects of two P levels ( 0 and 250 mg P Kg^-1 soil) on the plant responses (P uptake, P concentration, and relative yield) were studied in the greenhouse experiment using 12 soil samples. Abstract: 

Soil tilth is crucial to seedling emergence, plant growth, and crop yield. Soil tilth of unstable soil is very susceptible to change. Internal forces originating from matric suction can change soil physical properties. A laboratory study was conducted on pots of a surface silty clay loam soil of Khomeinishahr series (fine-loamy, mixed, thermic Typic Haplargids, USDA), located in Research Farm of Isfahan University of Technology. Soil surface subsidence, bulk density, cone index, and tensile strength were measured after first flood irrigation. Results showed that the seedbed (0-20 cm) with a bulk density of 1.2 Mg.m^-3 will be changed to a massive soil with high values of bulk density, cone index, and tensile strength after soil wetting. Slaking, slumping and coalescence of the soil caused soil surface to subside about 1.5 cm in 20 cm soil layer. After irrigation, cone index and tensile strength increased abruptly with decreasing of moisture content. It is shown that the dominant source of strength (cone index and tensile strength) gain during drying is the effective stress due to matric suction. In the absence of external loads, physical state (tilth) of the soil returned back to the original state. Therefore, soil slaking and slumping and rearrangement of particles along with the internal forces are the factors leading to soil hardness.

Abstract: 

Thirty genotypes of pistachio cultivars and related species were evaluated for genetic diversity using three polymorphic isozymes, i.e. Esterase, Peroxidase and Malate dehydrogenase. Young leaves of pistachio were crushed with extraction buffer containing: 20% sucrose, 0.01 M dithiothretiol, 2% polyethylene glycol, and 8% polyvenyl polypyrollidone. Samples were analyzed using isoelectric focussing on polyacrylamide gels containing 2% (WN) ampholyte. All the three isozymes revealed high degrees of polymorphism in pistachio cultivars and related species. Maximum polymorphism was observed for Est. enzyme. A total of 19 bands in Est. and 28 bands in MDH were observed in a wide range of pH gradient; however, in Per. there were 11 bands all of which located in a narrow range of pH gradient. Cluster analysis based on the three system enzymes revealed that all the 30 pistachio genotypes were in 8 main classes and 20 subclasses and the extent of genetic similarity reduced from cultivated varieties to species, which were finally classified in 3 groups. Sarakhs variety, a wild type of P. vera, was classified in a group between cultivated varieties and species.

Abstract: 

Aggregation is an important temporal property of soil structure that is affected by intrinsic soil properties and also soil use and management. Aggregate stability has a strong influence on many processes in soil such as infiltration, aeration, strength, erosion, and soils ability to transmit liquids, solutes, gases, and heat. In this study, undisturbed soil specimens from 0-10 and 10-20 cm depths were sampled during summer 1999 from some regions in Iran including Golestan, Kermanshah, West Azerbaijan, and Mazandaran. After drying the samples in lab, the different sizes of aggregates were separated and the wet aggregate stability (WAS) and dispersible clay (DC) were determined on 2-2.8 mm aggregates according to Pojasok & Kay procedure (1990(. The variance analysis of data showed significant differences among soils in all regions. The averages were compared by Duncan test to find the following order: Mazendaran > Golestan > Kermanshah > West Azerbaijan. Regression analysis of data of whole regions showed that the variability of aggregate stability was mainly explained by organic carbon content (R^2=0.723 in P > 0.0001). The clay content had the greatest effect on aggregate stability in samples from Golestan while sand content had the greatest effect in samples from West Azerbaijan. The resulting equations from stepwise regression can be used to estimate aggregate stability from other soil variables in the study regions.

Abstract: 

Genetic variation of 300 genotypes of durum wheat comprising CIMMYT/ICARDA and Iranian germplasm was evaluated in 1999-2000 at Research Farm of College of Agriculture, Isfahan University of Technology located at Lavark, Naiaf-Abad. Days to heading, days to maturity, plant height, spike length, grain weight per spike, number of grain per spike, number of spikes per m^2, 1000-grain weight, test weight, grain yield, biological yield, and harvest index were recorded. Coefficients of correlation, step-wise regression, factor analysis and cluster analysis of characters and genotypes were conducted using the studied traits. Results indicated that considerable genetic variations exist for the traits and, in particular for grain yield, harvest index, number of spikes per unit area and number of grain per spike. Grain yield had a positive and significant correlation with days to heading, days to maturity, number of grain per spike and grain weight per spike. Factor analysis for the genotypes detected 6 factors, which explained 76.7 percent of the total variation among data. These factors basically involved potential, of assimilate distribution, different aspects of plant storage, source-sink relationships, plant height and tillering potential. Cluster analysis was similar to factor analysis in grouping the characters. According to cluster analysis, the genotypes were calssified into 6 clusters with significant differences among all groups. Mean comparisons of traits in these groups showed that genotypes of groups 5 and 6 were superior in grain yield and harvest index and are beneficial to the local durum breeding objectives.

Abstract: 

In this study, 14322 growth trait records of 2387 sheep bred and reared in the Rearing and Breeding Station of Bakhtiari Sheep during 1989-1997 were used to estimate the phenotypic, genetic, and environmental trends for some of the growth traits using Animal Model for lambs, rams, and ewes. The genetic trend of birth weight, weaning weight, six months weight, daily gain from birth to weaning, daily gain from weaning to six month and daily gain from birth to six month were 12.2 (+2.9), 19.6 (+5.5), 28.7 (+8.7),.15(+0.04), 0.06 (+0.05) and 0.014 (+0.04) gr. for ewes as an indicator of genetic level of the herd respectively. Also, average of the genetic change rate per year for rams and lambs were calculated. Overall, the maximum progress rate was for six-month body weight (28.7 gr. per year) and the next was weaning weight (19.6 gr. per year). The results for lambs and rams also showed that these traits had the same rank for the genetic progress. The progress could be due to direct selection for these traits in the selection index criterion although there were negative phenotypic and environmental trends during the study years. Negative phenotypic and environmental trends could be due to bad environmental conditions, especially to nutrition of the sheep in an unsuitable (drought) climate during the study years.

Abstract: 

Planting density, through its impact on the level of available environmental factors may have significant impacts on grain yield in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). In order to investigate the impacts of plant density on grain yield, yield components and growth characteristics of safflower, a randomized complete block design field experiment with four replicates was conducted in spring-summer, 2000, at Lavark Research Farm (Lat. 32° 32 N and Long. 51 ° 23 E), College of Agriculture, Isfahan University of Technology, Isfahan, Iran. Arak-2811 and Kouseh safflower genotypes were seeded at 16.6, 22.2, 33.3 and 50 plants/m^2. For establishing these plant densities, plants were seeded in 12, 9, 6 and 4 cm distances, respectively, on ten 8-m-long rows spaced 50 cm apart in each plot. Plant density had no impact on plant growth stages with the exception of button formation. Genotype had significant effects on days to seedling emergence, button formation, and 50% flowering. While both number of days and accumulated growing degree-days for all growth stages decreased with an increase in plant density, Arak-2811 was earlier than Kouseh for most growth stages. Number of branches and heads per plant, number of heads per branch, number of seeds per head and harvest index showed significant decreases with increasing plant density. The decrease in the mentioned grain yield attributes was mainly negated by greater number of plants per m^2, leading to no significant variation in grain yield between plant densities of the two genotypes. Arak-2811 produced a significantly greater number of heads per branch and 1000-grain weight; however, these differences did not lead to any greater grain yield compared to Kousehdue, mainly due to the greater number of branches in the latter. Neither of the leaf area index, leaf area duration, and crop growth rate varied significantly with plant density and between two genotypes, suggesting no difference in dry matter production capabilities of the two genotypes under environmental conditions of the present study.

Abstract: 

An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of substituting alfalfa hay (Medicago sativa) with Gundelia tournefortii hay (a range forage in Fars Province) in the ration of fattening lambs. Alfalfa hay was substituted with Gundelia tournefortii harvested at the final stages of flowering at various ratios (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% dry matter basis) in the ration of fattening lambs. The rations (iso-nitrogenous and iso-energetic) were pelleted and each ration was fed for 75 days to 12 Shirazi Grey ram lambs with an average age of 136 days. The lambs were slaughtered and their feedlot performance and carcass characteristics were measured. Substituting alfalfa hay with Gundelia tournefortii hay did not significantly affect the mean daily weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, dressing percentage, internal fat weight, carcass meat content, or meat DM and CP contents (p>0.05). However, backfat depth was significantly different among various rations (p<0.01). At present costs, the inclusion of Gundelia tournefortii in the ration of fattening lambs seemed to be cost-effective; the cost of one kg DM of ration was 1266, 1155, 1050, 924, and 787 Rials for rations 1 to 5, respectively.

Abstract: 

In order to determine the effects of using macaroni wastes instead of barley on dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield and composition, and nutrient digestibility, eight lactating Holstein cows (4 primiparous and 4 multiparous) in midlactation were used in a 4x4 Latin square design. The experimental periods were 21 d with 16 d for adjustment and 5 d for data collection. Treatments included a control diet (1) and diets 2, 3, and 4 containing 15, 30, and 45% macaroni wastes, respectively, which were fed three times a day as total mixed rations. During the last 5 days of each period, feed and , fecal samples were taken for determination of DMI and apparent digestibilities and milk samples for fat, protein, lactose, and solids no fat (SNF). During the last day of collection period, urine samples were collected 3 and 5 h post feeding for pH determination. The results showed no significant differences among experimental traits in either primiparous or multiparous, and across all cows. Milk yield and efficiency of feed conversion were no significantly higher for diets 2, 3, and 4 compared with control cows. Compared to the control diet, DMI, fat, protein and SNF percentages did not significantly decrease in diets 3 and 4. From the results of this expriment, it may be concluded that replacing barley with macaroni wastes up to 45 percent could increase energy intake without any adverse effects on milk production and composition or on metabolic function in midlactating dairy cows.

Abstract: 

Planting pattern through changing vegetative growth and utilization of environmental resourses affects yield components and seed yield. These effects were studied in the spring of 2000 at the Agricultural Research Station, Isfahan University of Technology, using a randomized complete block design with a split plot layout and three replications. Main plots consisted of three row distances (30 cm flat, and 45 and 60 cm on bed), and sub-plots included three planting densities (30, 40, and 50 plants m^-2). The experiment was planted on March 13 using local safflower variety of Isfahan, named Koseh. Increase in row distance and plant density enhanced most developmental stages of safflower. Leaf area index was not significantly affected by row distance but increased as planting density increased. Up to the 50% flowering stage, 30 cm row distance produced highest plant dry weight, but had the least dry weight at the end of the growing season, probably due to the strong shedding of leaves. Up to the end of flowering stage, 50 plants m^-2 treatment produced the highest plant dry weight, but ranked lower as compared to 30 plants m^-2 treatment at the physiological maturity, probably due to the shedding of leaves. Row distance had no significant effect on number of branches per plant and per square meter, number of heads per branch, number of seeds per head, 1000-seed weight and harvest index. But number of heads per plant and per square meter as well as seed yield per plant and per square meter significantly decreased as planting distance increased. Plant density had no significant effect on number of branches per plant, number of heads per square meter, number of seeds per head, 1000-seed weight and seed yield. Increase in planting density increased number of branches per square meter, but reduced number of heads per branch and per plant, seed yield per plant and harvest index. The highest seed yield (4769 kg ha^-1 was obtained with 30 cm row distance and 40 plants m^-2 treatment. On average, 397 kg ha^-1 petal was harvested, which has a large economic value. However, petal clipping, over all treatments, reduced seed yield by about 7.4%. Considering the advantages of uniform distribution of plants and adaptation of safflower to flat planting, 30 cm row distance with 40 plants m^-2 might be appropriate for planting safflower under conditions similar to this experiment.

Abstract: 

Iranian flat breads generally have short shelf life. The result of this situation is usually enormous bread wastage. Among the most important factors involved are lack of proper packing and storage methods. In this study, the best temperature for bread packing was determined and the effects of three types of plastic wrapping on Taftoon bread baked of the typical flour were investigated after 72 hours of storage. These wrappings included a two-layer wrapping of oriented polypropylene and polyethylene (OPP/ PE) with a thickness of 60 #m a three-layer wrapping of PP/PE/PE with a thickness of 70 #m and a two-layer polyethylene with a thickness of 70 #m together with cardboard and plastic. Bread packing was carried out at two different temperature ranges (20-25°C and 45-50°C). Results from moisture measurements and water activity test indicated that the characteristics of breads packed in different wrappings showed significant differences (p<0.01). Moisture percentage and water activity (a__w) were lower in layers with higher permeability to moisture and water vapor and, consequently, algal growths reduced in these wrappings. Reduced moisture content, however, reduced the final bread quality score. It was also found that employing cardboard covered in polyethylene had no significant effect on bread shelf life during 72 hours of bread storage. Another finding from the present study was that packing a large number of l0x10 cm bread pieces within one single wrapping with cardboard and plastic was satisfactory and that the presence of the cardboard helped maintain bread shape during transportation and storage.

Abstract: 

A ruminal in situ experiment using three fistulated ewes was conducted to determine dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) degradation of steam-flaked broomcorn (SFBr), ground broomcorn (GBr) and ground barley (GB). Grain samples were suspended in the rumen of sheep for 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 48 h. Nylon bags were washed with tap water after removal. Effective degradability of DM at outflow rates of k = 0.05 and k = 0.08 h^-1 was significantly higher for SFBr than for GBr (59 and 53% vs. 43 and 35%). SFBr has considerably higher soluble DM than GBr and GB. Insoluble DM of SFBr was lower than that of GBr and GB. Solubility of CP in broomcorn grain was significantly decreased by steam-flaking, but degradation rate of insoluble CP was not altered. Results from this study showed that SFBr supplies the major source of availabe nutrients for rumen microorganisms compared with GBr. In other words, using the most efficient processing method for ruminants will be necessary.

Abstract: 

Bulk tomato paste is produced in concentrations higher than 35% (350 Brix scale) and its packaging is not hermetic. In recent years, the production of this product in our country has considerably increased. One of the most important problems in the tomato paste industry of Iran is the preservation of bulk tomato paste. Shelf-life of tomato paste depends on many factors such as initial quality of tomato paste, cooling conditions, salting, packaging, handling, and cold storage. The product factors evaluated in this study included: 1) microbial parameters such as total count, acid resistant microorganisms, and Howard Mould Count; and 2) physico-chemical parameters such as acidity, pH, amount of lactic acid (D and L forms), and total dry matter. Experimental data showed that using high Brix (35-38) in producing tomato paste along with salting the product surface and storing it at 0 °C had only a limiting effect on microbial changes and could not prevent their growth completely. However, salting treatment had a great effect on surface growth of fungi and their ability to produce colonies and mycelia. On the basis of the results obtained from this study, cooling of bulk tomato paste in ambient temperature is critical to bulk tomato paste production process and also has an important effect on the quality and shelf life of the product.

Abstract: 

Bread, the main staple food of Iran, imparts a major portion of energy and protein to urban and rural diets. Due to the use of flour with high extraction rate and improper fermentation of the corresponding dough, traditional breads have a rather high level of Phytic acid. This has a detrimental effect on absorption and availability of minerals (Ca, Fe, Zn, Mg, Cr, Cu, etc.), carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, thus leading, for e.g., to iron-deficiency anemia in the present study, flours with different extraction rates (with known phytic acid content) were used for baking Sangak and Lavash breads and analyzed for phytic acid. Different levels of yeast, times of fermentation and extraction rates of flour were applied in the preparation of breads and their phytic acid levels were then estimated. Based on technological merits and residual phytic acid contents, breads prepared from two types of treatments were selected, their chemical composition, availabilities of iron and lysine as well as organoleptic characteristics were evaluated. Results indicated that under the employed conditions total destruction of phytic acid in Sangak and Lavash is rather impractical. A considerable reduction in phytic acid was noted: in Lavash bread using 2.5% yeast, 4 h of fermentation and a 50-50 blend of flours with 81.0 and 86.5% extraction rates and in Sangak bread with similar conditions (except for the flour which was a 50-50 blend of 86.5 & 97.5% extraction rates). Available lysine was similar in both of the selected breads compared to their respective references. Their available iron contents, however, were higher than their corresponding references (P <= 0.05 ). No significant differences were observed with regard to organoleptic evaluations of selected breads as compared to their references (P <= 0.05 ). Overall, the above-mentioned treatments are recommended for the baking of "Sangak" and "Lavash "breads.

Abstract: 

Whey powder, due to its lactose and protein contents, can be used as an important flour improver to decrease the rate of staling. In the- present investigation, whey powder was added at 5 levels (zero to 5%, W/W) to the flour of Sangak bread. Bread was baked according to the formula and procedure used by traditional Sangak bakeries. Bread samples were kept at room temperature or under refrigeration for 36 hours. They were then evaluated for staling by a taste panel. They were also subjected to proximate analysis. The dough was examined for farinographic, amylographic, extensographic and fermentographic properties. The data of staling tests including color, texture, flavor and also proximate analysis data were analyzed by ANOVA. Finally, differences among treatments were examined by Ducan"s multiple range procedure. The results indicated that the best treatment was the use of 3% whey powder, as far as staling and texture of bread are concerned. However, the best color of bread was achieved with 5% whey powder; so was true of the protein, ash and fat contents. Viscosity, as tested by amylography, and also parameters of farinography reached their highest levels in the dough prepared from flour having 5% whey powder in the formula. The best extensibility was observed with the flours containing 4% whey powder and the highest dough energy was associated with the dough prepared from flour having 5% whey powder. As for the loaf volume, best results were obtained with the dough prepared from flour having 3% whey powder. Overall, it is concluded that the use of 3% whey powder is the best treatment with regard to the delay in the rate of staling, increase in loaf volume, and color appeal of Sangak bread, and rheological properties of the dough.

Abstract: 

In this study, the effects of quality and quantity of protein in flours with 95% and 70% extraction rates obtained from Mahdavi and Tajan wheat cultivars each baked at two different durations (100 and 75 sec.) and temperatures (210 and 250°C); after wrapping in polyethylene packages with 40pm thickness were investigated. All tests were carried out during 168 hours after packing and at 24h intervals. Results indicated that bread staling was affected by wheat Cultivar, flour extraction rate, and storage time. Bread prepared from Tajan flour had lower firmness and staleness than that prepared from Mahdavi. High bran content bread was firmer than that with lower bran content. Organoleptic tests indicated that bread baked with 95% flour and bread baked at high temperatures with short durations were not very acceptable.

Abstract: 

Systemic properties of pyroquilon, an anti-blast systemic chemical, used in controlling rice blast disease caused by Pyricularica grisea, were investigated through in vivo tests. Rice plants were treated with pyroquilon as granules in soil. Leaf and stem tissues were collected at different times after treatment and pyroquilon was extracted from tissues and detected by gas chromatography. Treated rice plants were also exposed to disease infection in blast nursery at different times and disease incidence was evaluated one week later. Pyroquilon was detected in leaf tissue one day after treatment (DAT), reached maximum during 4-7 DAT, and then reduced gradually to a no detectable level after 28 DAT. In stem tissue, change in pyroquilon content was similar to but its quantity was less than that of leaf tissue. On inoculated plants, disease was controlled up to 60% at 2 DAT and completely controlled during 4-28 DAT. The results indicated that pyroquilon could be taken up and systemically translocated in rice plants after applying as granules in soil. Extent of disease control was a good function of pyroquilon content in leaf tissue (R^2=0.93) and 2 ppm of compound in leaf could provide 90% control of the disease. In contrast, disease control was not a good function of pyroquilon content in stem tissue (R^2=0.30).

Abstract: 

In order to compare Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (Pss) isolates from cereals, citrus, stone fruits and weeds by phenotypic characteristics, serological properties and pathogenicity, samples were taken during 1998-1999 in Fars Province, Karaj, Fereidan, Aligudarz and Shahrekord regions. From 350 fluorescent isolates, 47 were negative with respect to oxidase, potato soft rot and arginine dihydrolase tests but positive in hypersensitive reaction (HR) on tobacco, pelargonium, or both. In complementary biochemical tests, these isolates were identified as Pss. Based on LOPAT (levan, oxidase, potato soft rot, arginine dihydrolase and HR on tobacco leaves) tests, the isolates were divided into two groups, but based on the results of GATTa tests alone, isolates were divided into nine groups. Isolates from different hosts showed differences in lipolysis, syringomycin production, ice nucleation activity, lecithinase, pathogenicity, serology and protein profiles.

Abstract: 

In this study, susceptibility of the first three larval stages of Spodoptera exigua to Bacillus thuringiensis was investigated. To determine the LC5o values for each larval instar, 6 different logarithmic concentrations of Bacillus thuringiensis were used. A control was also included in each of the bioassays. The value of LC5o for 1st instar larvae, that had been treated one to four hours after hatching, was 311.617 ppm. For the 2d and third instars, the larvae values of LC5o were 1356.95 and 2708.27 ppm, respectively. It was clear that larval susceptibility to Bacillus thuringiensis decreased with age. In order to enhance the Bacillus thuringiensis efficiency to control Spodoptera exigua under field conditions, Bacillus thuringiensis should be applied at egg hatch peaks.

Abstract: 

One hundred and two microorganisms were isolated from 85 paddy soil samples of different locations in Guilan Province. Antagonistic effects of the microorganisms were tested against Gibberella Fujikuroi on PDA medium. Twenty one microorganism isolates were selected for seed treatment in blotter test. Seven isolates that were satisfactorily effective in reducing pathogen colonies formed on seeds and seedlings were tested in controlling disease in a greenhouse experiment with split plot design. The antagonists were Bacillus subtilis, B. circulars, Bacillus sp., Trichoderma harzianum, T. virens (2 isolates), and F.23 (unidentified). Results showed that all antagonists effectively reduced the disease in sterilized soil compared with control but overall effectiveness of B. subtilis, T. harzianum, and T. virens was higher than others and lower than the fungicide treatment (thiophant methyl thiram W.P. 80% , 2g/L). It was found that when seeds were treated with antagonists prior to inoculation with the pathogen, the effectiveness of antagonists was significantly better than when they were applied after seed infection with the pathogen.

Abstract: 

High attraction is reported for yellow sticky traps to capture pistachio psylla. In pest management, it is important to forecast from the adult population density the density of other developmental stages in order to gain an estimate of the density in damaging stages. In 1998 and 1999, yellow sticky boards with 10×15×0.15 cm were installed in two pistachio orchards in Borkhar district of Isfahan and egg and nymphal densities were simultaneously counted on leaves. Collected data were used to determine regression relationships between two weeks average egg density, first and second nymphal instar densities and the sum of egg and first and second instar nymphal densities, one week after the average adult capture in two previous weeks. A low correlation was found between egg count and adult capture, but higher coefficients were obtained between other stages. It was possible to estimate first and second instar nymphal populations Y from the following equations: For high adult densities (X): Y^= 58.6+0.4762X-(7×105)X^2 R^2=0.82 commercial orchard Y^ = 27.68+0.5092X-(5× 10^-55)X^2 R^2=0.86 abandoned orchard and for low adult densities (X) Y^= 1.7162X-17.454 R^2=0.97 commercial orchard Y^ = L 1117X-4.9841 R^2=0.90 abandoned orchard The application of this method is recommended for the management of pistachio psylla.

Abstract: 

In order to identify the plant-parasitic nematodes of important cereals (wheat, barley, and corn) in Isfahan Province, 120 soil and root samples were collected from the rhizosphere of these crops in various locations in the region during 1999 and 2000. Nematodes were extracted from soil by sieving and centrifugal sugar-flotation method. The specimens were killed and fixed in FGA (formaldehyde, glycerin and acetic acid 4:1:1) hot solution. The extracted nematodes were mounted in glycerin, permanent slides prepared, and studied by light microscope. The results revealed the presence of three species belonging to two genera of family Criconematidae as follows: Criconenmella antipolitana, C. xenoplax, Hemicycliophora poranga. H. poranga was extracted from rhizosphere of com and reported for the first time from Iran. The most frequently occurring and dominant species was C. antipolitana that was isolated from soil around the roots of wheat and barley in several areas. C. xenoplax was extracted from a wheat field with the history of peach cultivation. These species are new records for Isfahan Province.

Abstract: 

In order to investigate the effects of mineral compounds as complementary nutrients for silkworm, Bombyx mori, an experiment was performed in CRD with five treatments including: 1%, 5% and10% concentrations of multi-mineral mixtures (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) with normal and distilled water treatments as controls. The larvae were fed by mulberry leaves from Shien Ichenoise variety up to the fourth instar. From the beginning of the fourth instar, the supplementary leaves were used once a day. The supplementation of the leaves was done by spraying the solution on them. The amount of total protein and uric acid in haemolymph of a 6-day 5a` instar larva was measured. The value of total protein compared to controls had significantly increased in all mineral treatments. The larvae"s weight on the third day of the fifth instar had significant difference from controls, but the weight of silk gland did not show such a difference. However, uric acid of insects blood demonstrated little differences but it showed no statistical significant differences from that in controlled insects. Despite this, the weight of cocoon, cocoon shell and pupa also had significant differences compared to controls, where this enhancement was higher in females than in males. Due to increase of the number of eggs, statistically there was a significant difference between the 10% treatment and others. The compounds had decreased the hatching percentage.

Abstract: 

In order to study the nectar quantity and quality of some onion cultivars and honeybees foraging activity on them, a complete randomized block design with three replications was conducted. Ten selected onion cultivars consisting of Ghom, Kashan, Azarshahr, Dorcheh, Tarom, Kazeroon l, Kavar, Abarkooh, Hurand, and Yellow Sweet Spanish were used. Sixty mir, mother bulbs of different onion cultivars were planted in 3x4 m plots on 6 lines. The distance between rows was 35 cm and plants were spaced 25 cm apart on each row. At flowering time, bees activity on the inflorescences was studied and flower nectar was collected in 10 micro-liter capillary tubes. Nectar volume was determined and analyzed. Mean numbers of honeybees visiting on inflorescence every 10 minutes and the mean residing time of each honeybee on a seed stalk (inflorescence) were significantly different in different cultivars. Hurand flowers had the least number of visitors and Dorche flowers had the longest visiting time. The amount of nectar varied in different cultivars, so did glucose (G), fructose (F), and sucrose (S) contents. Except for the Abarkuh cultivar that had more glucose than it had other sugars, all the cultivars had higher quantities of fructose than they had other sugars while sucrose had the least quantities among the sugars. Nectar sugar ratio in most of the cultivars was hexose dominant, which was identified by the low S/(F+G) ratio. Potassium, calcium, and sodium contents in nectar were different in different cultivars, too. Finally, the results showed that foraging activity of honeybees on onion inflorescences depends on the interactions of several factors such as nectar quantity and, more importantly, on sugar quantity and ratio as well as potassium content.
