Abstract

Background and Aim: The LARYNGEAL MASK airway (LMA) maintains the airway under anesthesia through spontaneous breathing technique without the need of endotracheal intubations. Although routine LMA supports an adequate tracheal airway, the CLASSIC METHOD had some limitations and problems. In this study, we compared the results of the two methods of (new and classic) LMA.Patients and Methods: The study was a double blind randomized clinical trial. Patients who were candidates for ophthalmology surgery were enrolled in the study. The patients were randomly divided in to two groups: routine (classic) and new LMA methods of intubation approach. Ease of INSERTION, local bleeding, postoperative sore throat and hemodynamic changes during operation in the two groups were assessed. In this study Chi-square and t-tests were used for comparing the two groups. SPSS V.13 was used for statistical analysis.Results: The results showed that there was no significant difference between the two methods in regard to the ease of INSERTION. Also sore throat and bleeding were not seen in any of the two groups.Hemodynamic changes during operation between the groups were not significant. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures did not show any significant differences in the two groups.Conclusion: Our finding showed that the new method of LMA was similar in regard to complications and eases of INSERTION to the CLASSIC METHOD and can be used for reducing contamination with discharges and secretions of patients.
