IMPACT OF PERCEIVED ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT ON ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT AND PERFORMANCE: A STUDY OF MELLAT BANK BRANCHES IN TEHRAN

Abstract

 This study seeks to explore the relationships between PERCEIVED ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT (POS), dimensions of ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT (affective, normative, and continuance), and ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE. A sample of 65 branches of Mellat bank was selected and 789 branch employees completed the research questionnaire. The questionnaire included PERCEIVED ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT scale (Eisenberger, Huntington, Hutchison, and Sowa, 1986) and affective, continuance, and normative commitment scales (Mayer and Allen, 1997). ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE was measured using hard data on operational performance criteria. The results showed that POS is positively and significantly correlated with affective and normative commitment. On the other hand, no significant relationships were found between POS and continuance commitment and also ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE. This study provides support for the importance of supporting employees in order to improve their affective and normative commitment to the organization. Moreover, the results hold practical implications for managerial interventions focused on promoting commitment to the organization.
