Abstract

The main objective of this research is to “study the EDUCATIONal role of television in the improvement of the TRAFFIC behavior of the citizens of Tehran”. For this purpose, the six hypotheses of this research have been studied using a survey method. The statistical population of this research is formed from the citizens of Tehran sampled by Cochrane formula. The sample consisting of 386 individuals is taken using multistage cluster sampling method. For sampling, five geographical regions of the north, south, east, west, and center of Tehran have been selected among 22 districts of this city by drawing lots. Thereafter, two districts of each geographical region have been chosen at random and by drawing lots. Questionnaire has been used for assessment and the data collected by the questionnaires have been analyzed by the descriptive and inferential tables through SPSS software. After the survey is conducted and the data are analyzed, the results showed that:Most citizens of Tehran watch TV, but they are less interested in the TRAFFIC training TV programs and they watch these programs less that other ones. This may be due to the limited attentions paid by the mass media to TRAFFIC and the unattractiveness of the TV programs. If these programs are repeated sufficiently and enough emphasis is given to these programs, it is considerably possible that the audience of these programs is increased in number. The audiences of TRAFFIC training programs believe that these programs are suitable and have a positive effect on their behaviors and conducts, especially when they are provided in an attractive form such as animation. The visual attractiveness of these types of programs satisfies their audiences considerably and encourages them to receive the message provided by such programs more welcomingly. When the message of these programs is welcomed by the audiences, they use the correct behaviors and even they encourage their families and others to behave correctly, as it was trained. Most people stated that the best time for broadcasting TRAFFIC-training programs is between the programs with high number of audience. This should be observed by the producers, since the audiences do not leave their favorite program and they have to watch the TRAFFIC-training program broadcasted meanwhile.
