Abstract

 One of the useful and cost-saving methods in both promotion and coordination of nursing profession along with improvement resulted from technology of social and medical science is the in- service training. It includes any professional training that improves the quality of individual practice. The aim of this study was to determine the factors influencing nurses’ participation in continuing educational programs. This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study and was conducted in year 2011 in Bojnurd. Random Sample of 120 nurses selected from those working at two educational hospitals. Data was collected using a valid and reliable questionnaire, which focused on gathering participants’ viewpoints on the influence of four categories of factors (i.e., personal, organizational, professional, and program) on their participation in continuing educational activities. The data was fed to SPSS18 and statistical methods of t-test, Chi Square, and Spearman Correlation Coefficient were employed to analyze the data. 57%of participants believed that continuing education has improved their knowledge, awareness, and functional skills. Whereas, 33/6% of nurses have mentioned personal factors as the MOTIVATION to participate in these programs, 13%organizatonal, 9% program and 51 %professional factors. Finnaly, study findings suggests that, for these nurses, personal and professional factors were the most MOTIVATIONal factors to participate in these in the programs; therefore some strategies will be needed to enhance organizational and program factors while improving them.
