Abstract

Introduction: Development of potent anti-tumor drugs with minimum side effects on normal cells is one of the main goals in tumor research field. In this regard natural compounds especially herbal derivatives could be considered as an important source.Objective: In this study, anti-tumor effect of SIM5 -an herbal extract - was studied using two LYMPHOMA tumor cell lines (Raji and Jurkat) in comparison with normal BLOOD MONONUCLEAR CELLS.Materials & Methods: The cells were incubated with various concentrations of SIM5 for 24, 48 and 72 hours and cytotoxic effects were evaluated by MTT test.Results: As the results indicate, tumor cells proliferation and viability was diminished at concentrations between 0.05-1 mg/ml after 24 hours without any significant toxicity on normal mononuclear cells. All concentrations of SIM5 (ranging between 0.01-1 mg/ml) had significant toxic effect on RAJI CELL LINE after 48 and 72 hours and 0.05-1 mg/ml of SIM5 had significant toxic effect on JURKAT CELL LINE after 24, 48 and 72 hours. There was no toxic effect on normal mononuclear cells at concentrations less than 1mg/ml of SIM5 after 48 and 72 hours.Conclusion: Further investigation is needed in order to realize the mechanism of effect, optimum dose and the effect of SIM5 in vivo as an anti-tumor drug.
