Abstract

The relationship between attribution styles and self-esteem was investigated on Gilan university students. The subjects were 151 females & 126 males. Seligman attribution style questionnaire and Copper-Smith selfesteem inventory were used. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) suggests no significant relationship between self-esteem and university courses. A t- test for independent groups suggests that there were no significant relationship between male and female self-esteem. Stepwies analysis of regression showed that there were negative and significant relationship between three types of attribution (stability-instability attribution after succession, stability-instability attribution and general- specific after failure). It means that there is reduction of self-esteem with the increase of stability attribution after succession and failure, and general attribution after succession. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) suggests that there were significant relationship between male and female students on internal-external attribution styles after succession and general- specific attribution styles after failure, it means females had more internal attribution style on positive events and more external attribution style on negative events. There were no significant relationship between different attribution style and entrance year to the university and courses. A Chi-square test showed significant relationship between entrance year to the university and internal-eXternal attribution styles after succesion.
