Abstract

This cross sectional research was carried out to determine the prevalence of DEPRESSION among the STUDENTs of health faculty of kerman university of medical sciences in April 2001. The study was performed on all the STUDENTs by census sampling and using Beck standardized questionnaire. Totally 346 STUDENTs (80%of the STUDENTs) completed the questionnaire. Acquired results showed that 61% out of all the subjects had different degrees of DEPRESSION including 22% border DEPRESSION, 15% slight DEPRESSION, 17% average DEPRESSION, 5% severe DEPRESSION and 2% very severe DEPRESSION. As well as there was no significant relation between the rate of DEPRESSION and following variables: age, sex, marital status, residency, living resource, parents life, father level of education and term of study. In turn the rate of DEPRESSION had a significant correlation with mothers job, field of study, final degree of study, university entrance year, field of study satisfaction, job future, physical and mental status of the STUDENT. In general the average rate of DEPRESSION was higher in STUDENTs with mental and physical disorders.
