DEVELOPMENTAL STUDY OF THINKING STYLES IN STUDENTS AND ITS RELATION TO CREATIVITY AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

Abstract

 This study was a developmental study of thinking styles and their relationship with creativity and academic achievement. The sample used in this study consisted of secondary and high school students (n=500) as well as undergraduate and graduate students (n=310) of both sexes (range: 12 -40 years). Their thinking styles and creativity were evaluated by Sternberg -wagner Thinking Style Inventory and Abedi Creativity Inventory as well as Torrance Thinking Creative Test (TTCT) respectively (TTCT) was conducted only on secondary and high school students). The results of the study indicated that: 1) Thinking styles among the age groups were significantly different. The prevalence of monarchic, oligarcich, anarchic and conservative thinking styles reduced by an increase in age. The prevalence of legislative and hierarchic thinking syles increased by an increase in age.2) Thinking styles of subjects were significantly different based on their grades. With increase in school and university grades monarchic, oligarchic, anarchic, local and conservative thinking syles reduced significantly.3) Thinking syles of male subjects were significantly different from the thinking style of female subjects. In comparison with male subjects, the prevalence of legislative, executive,judicial, monarchic, hierachic, oligarchic, anarchic, global, local and liberal thinking styles were higher in female subjects.4) There was a significant relatioinship between thinking styles and creativity. Liberal thinking style was positively related to creativity and conservative thinking style was negatively related to creativity.5) There was a significant relationship between thinking styles and academic achievement. Liberal and hierarchic thinking styles were good predictors of a high academic achievement in secondary and high school students and oligarchic thinking style was a good predictor of a low academic achievement in university students.This article has been prepared by Dr. Susan Emamipour from Azad Islamic University by the guidance of Dr. Ali -Akbar safe, professor of Allameh Tabatabai University, whose contributions are highly appreciated.
