Abstract

One of the literary-cultural phenomena in Qajar Dynasty is the translation of non-Persian texts into Persian. The process dates back centuries before, however, by a close analysis of the movement during Qajar Period based on the resources we have, we can fully grasp its vastness. The first translations are from Abbas Mirza period. During the reign of Naser al-Din Shah, the focus of attention shifted to translation of non- Persian texts. Moreover, the growing awareness about the socio- cultural context of the country, development of relations with the West and personal support of the King made it a translation movement. The translated books show us the trends, i. e. the intellectual and cultural needs of the time. However, these factors changed during the reign of Mozaffar al-Din Shah. Hence, the socio- political tension as well as power struggles slowed down the translation movement. On the other hand, Iran- France cultural affairs, and the scholarships awarded to academics to study in France played an important role in the growth and dominance of the French language in Iran.
