Background & Aims: The health promoting behaviors is an important topic in the study of chronic diseases, especially cancer. Therefore, this study, aimed to determine the effect of peer support on health-promoting behaviors of breast cancer patients, was conducted in 2015-16.Materials & Methods: In this clinical trial, 140 patients with breast cancer were selected with convenice sampling and then randomly allocated into two control and intervention groups. Six discussion sessions were held for the intervention group by two survivors of breast cancer with the highest score in HPLPII questionnaire. Data were collected before and after the intervention, using demographic data questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory and health-promoting lifestyle questionnaire of Walker. Results: Collected data in the intervention and control groups, before the intervention, showed no significant difference in overall average score of health promoting behaviors of the patients (P=0.99).However, after the intervention, the difference between the mean score of health promoting behaviors in two the groups was significant (P<0.001). Also the mean health promoting behaviors (intervention group) before the intervention were 21.31±6.31 in terms of spiritual growth, 24.84±6.51 in health responsibility, and 11.74±3.70 in terms of interpersonal relationships, 14.41±3.50 in stress management, 8.05±1.77 in Physical Activity and 13.03±3.94 in nutrition, and after the intervention the mean score of health promoting behaviors in its dimensions (spiritual growth, health responsibility, interpersonal relationships, stress management, Physical Activity and nutrition), respectively, had changed to 28.43±3.29, 32.90±2.87, 14.82±2.08, 21.90±4.62, 11.56±1.70, 19.41±2.10 which shows the effect of the intervention. Conclusion: Peer-led support increased health promoting behaviors score in breast cancer patients. It is proposed that peer support should be used in patients with breast cancer to improve the health promoting behaviors.

Background & Aims: Following a special diet, restricting liquids, and taking medicine to cure patients suffering from chronic kidney failure who are being treated by hemodialysis are crucial. The present study was carried out to study the relationship between self-efficacy and following a special diet among these patients.Materials & Methods: A case-control study was carried out on 310 patients receiving hemodialysis at Taleghani Educational and Healthcare Center in Orumiyeh. In this research, the patients were sampled through full enumeration and were divided to two groups_ a group with members who followed their diet, and the other group in which the members did not follow the diet_ according to their average results from laboratory parameters. The self-efficacy of the patients was measured and compared by a valid and reliable tool made by the researcher. Results: The results obtained from comparing the demographic data (age, gender, and...) indicated that there was not a significant statistical difference between the two groups. The results from comparing the average values for self-efficacy in the following group (64.41±30.6) and non-following group (08.36±83.6) indicated a meaningful difference between these two groups (p˂0.05).Conclusion: The members of the following group had a higher self-efficacy compared to the members of the non-following group. Therefore, taking some actions in order to boost the self-efficacy in the patients of the latter group may accompany an increase in their accepting a special diet which can lead to better therapeutic results.

Abstract:

Background & Aims: Multiple Sclerosis as a chronic disease causes stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health problems for reasons such as sudden onset, lack of prognosis and definitive treatment. Therefore, the present study was carried out aimed at the role of illness perception and perceived social support in predicting psychological distress of MS patients.Materials & Methods: The method used in this research was descriptive-correlation. The statistical population included all of the MS patients who referred to the welfare center of Ardabil to obtain the medical services and formed the file in the first half of 2014. Of this population, 60 individuals were selected as the total available sampling. The multidimensional scale of perceived social support, questionnaire of illness perception and the measures of depression, anxiety and stress (DASS-21) were used to collect data. Also, in order to analyze the data Pearson correlation test and multiple regression were used on the software SPSS -16 (p<0.05).Results: The results showed that in patients with MS, all components of illness perception except (outcome of disease, personal control and illness integrity) have a significant correlation with (anxiety, stress and depression) (p<0.05). It was also observed a significant relationship among all components of social support and depression and also between the family support component and anxiety. Also, the results of regression analysis showed that 39% of the variance in depression, 38% of anxiety and 33% of the variance in stress is explained by the illness perception and perceived social support (p<0.01).Conclusion: The results of this research support the role of illness perception and perceived social support in predicting psychological distress in MS patients. So, given the higher levels of psychological injuries and disturbances in patients with multiple sclerosis, identification of causal and underlying factors seems necessary in maintaining and improving the health and psychological well-being in this group of chronic patients.
