Title

INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES IN IDENTITY STYLES AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: THE ROLE OF COMMITMENT AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING

Pages

  16-29

Abstract

The aim of this research was to examine the role of IDENTITY STYLES through IDENTITY COMMITMENT and PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING, and, the study of IDENTITY COMMITMENT and PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING roles on ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE. A sample of 340 students (145 males and 195 females) was chosen by a multistage sampling method. It was conducted to the sample the Identity Style Inventory (White, Wampler & Winn, 1999-IS1 6G) and the Scales of Psychological Wellbeing (Ryff, 1995). Using path analysis, the results showed that the indirect and total effect of exogenous variables through the IDENTITY COMMITMENT and the PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING are significant to all models with ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE. The direct effect of commitment on ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE was significantly positive, but, its indirect effect was only by personal growth, positive relationship with others, goal in life and self-acceptance microscales. With exception for autonomy scale, the direct effect of psychological well-bing on ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE was significant. Overall, the results indicate that IDENTITY STYLES could predict students' ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE by examining their IDENTITY COMMITMENT and PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING factors.
